$150 Honda Clone vs $600 Honda? Let’s settle this! Fuel Efficiency, Horsepower, Durability, Starting

Is the Honda clone just as good as the Honda? Is the Honda better than the Harbor Freight’s Predator and Briggs and Stratton Engines? All engines compared for fuel efficiency, oil consumption, noise and vibration during a 48-hour test. Used oil samples sent to an oil testing lab to provide information on wear metals. Engines also compared for torque and horsepower. I bought the engines, fuel to test the engines and all supplies to ensure an unbiased review. So, thank you for supporting the channel.

I can’t wait to see the testing results! 🙂 Thank you for all you do!

Just a few years ago you could get the Predator engine for just $99 with the 1 year warranty. We used to put them on our racing go karts and they held up surprising well with the governor removed. There’s actually two different styles of engines and they look identical except for the valve cover. The hemi version is the one you were testing in the video with a rectangle cast valve cover. The non hemi version has a octagon shape valve cover. The hemi version seems to last longer than the non hemi version but you have more upgrade accessories for the non hemi version. I’ve seen guy get 25hp out of the predator with upgrades. Great video.

I’ve got a Hemi on my log splitter, and 2 non-Hemi’s on a pair of pressure washers. The hemi definitely starts easier than the non-Hemi’s.

BTW… I think the Hemi is made by Loncin, and the non-Hemi is made by RATO, as best I can tell.

I got a Non-Hemi with a billet flywheel, jetted stock carb, governor removed, 22lb valve springs, billet rod, flat top piston, high compression head gasket, a straight pipe header and a mild stage 2 cam with a torque converter and it gets my BT200x to 52 mph. They’re rockets

A lot of people saying thanks for what you do, and I absolutely agree; but the thing that makes me happiest is to see you doing these tests with joy. It’s nice to see after all these years you’ve kept doing a service to us all but also still get joy from the work. I hope you’re as happy as your videos let on, the content is terrific.

Harbor Freight is just killing it these days. Also many thanks as usual for the amount of work you put in for us folks to guide us in the right way.

They started taking real estate when Sears died, and it seems as though they keep growing now that they realized the shocking fact that people want higher quality products…

@M. G. Increased prices due to inflation no doubt, but also popularity.

    • James Plotkin says:

I replaced the low powered B and S engine on my gas edger with a 212 Predator. Sure, it’s overkill, but it sure works well over the past 5 years. Best $99.

    • James Plotkin says:

@M. G. They have plenty of coupons during the year. Simply get on their email list and you’ll know when they have them.

Had four predator powered pumps at our marina during a flood that lasted two summers. They ran pretty much 24/7 for about three months each summer, only stopping when someone forgot to fill the gas. That is a lot of hours! To be fair, we ran our pumps about quarter to half throttle most of the time to make the fuel last. When the water was real high, they ran wide open for hours straight. Oil consumption was extremely low, so low people stopped checking them for days at a time. None failed or required any repairs. Oil was changed a couple of times each year. We also had one Honda powered pump, which ran a little quieter and seemed better quality. But in the end, the predator pumps did the same job for less money. I was skeptical about them at first, fearing they were nothing but Chinese junk, but they proved to be far more than expected.

I know this has to be a repeat comment but, my god, the amount of effort put into these videos is astounding! Not just on the mechanical testing side but content editing! It is appreciated!

Given so many extensive and professional reviews (beating many self proclaimed ‘experts’), I advocate becoming a patreon. He stands out and has done so long enough that his channel is currently the ONLY one for which am doing this. Besides, one thing I know for certain, this level of testing is $expensive$.

    • Jeffrey Yeater says:

      Agreed

    • Frank Wilson says:

@Scott Morgan yep, CR has lost a bit of its standing from 20 years ago.

Project Farm is the Gold Standard for testing. Consistent and thorough.

    • Mark McLeod says:

These are amazingly thorough videos. Todd probably makes cousin Eddie do all the farming by day and editing by night (he doesn’t need a lot of sleep) so he can prep and perform all these great tests. Thank you Todd and cousin Eddie!

  6. J Urban says:

Love that you went the extra mile and sent the oil off for testing.

    As always, fantastic real-world reviews.

  7. xDman383 says:

I can only imagine the hilarious sight of someone stumbling onto your farm and seeing a guy in a go cart towing a tractor with a mannequin on it lol. Always love seeing your videos. You are truly a godsend when it comes to YouTube content creators!

You should use the borescope to check the cylinder walls. I have a predator and a Briggs both with similar hours and the predator has worn away the factory honing marks and the Briggs cylinder wall looks brand new.

  9. Curtis Layton says:

Okay, okay, alright, you got me. I’ve been watching these for years, but this is the last straw. This one was so well done, and so useful, and so awesome that I’m signing up on Patreon right now to support this whole thing. You leave me no choice.

  10. JEDI Master says:

This was interesting Predator vs Honda, never thought that the Predator engine was slightly more fuel efficient.. So predator 212 is definitely worth the money in cost..
