Man… I wanted it so bad for her, and I understood Katy Perry’s frustration. But sometimes we are blinded by what we want. I agree with Lionel, and he did the right thing by protecting her. Being that she is Aretha’s granddaughter people are going to stand up and take notice of her first exposure. The hater’s are gonna be ready to trash her voice saying she’s nothing close to what Aretha was, and a 15 year old isn’t ready for that. The father in Lionel came out and his major love and respect for Grace and her family. She definitely has something but her parents should hire vocal coaches to work with her over the next year and really prep her and get her confidence up and her vocal training in. She’s definitely not going anywhere and I can’t wait to see her back next year.

R-E-S-P-E-C-T Lionel (and Luke), for protecting this vulnerable child! She’ll be back anyway, better and stronger!

This was a rollercoaster. She def has a sweet tone, an innocent confidence, and a powerful family vocal history. Did Lionel do the right thing? I think he was acting from care and passion, and you can’t go wrong when you follow your heart. She is going to be a star if she keeps working at it, tho. Anyone can see that. – So You Wanna Be A Singer

@robertantonnyc Does it really harm you???

@S Shutt I think it won’t also i mentioned this above but her dad said grandma would just be proud you tried also, lionels hug etc i think if shes not wanting or ready for show lionel might call and check in as well as katy possibly. I can tell shes a hard worker to before this and loves singing it’s nerve wrecking but very proud of the how it was handled criticism is hard sometimes but it was gentle at least compared to a lot of past these judges are tough but fair.

@GodsnCntrl I AM a voice coach. Perception is EVERYTHING as is timing. Let her get a year or two of coaching and some performance experience out of the limelight and she will roar back!!! At the very least, she should be able to sing with her eyes open. Closed, they signal that she is scared to death, and that is a confidence-killer!!!

    • robertantonnyc says:

@GodsnCntrl She is gone. 2 out of 3 judges said No. That’s real life.

    • JoAnna The Singer says:

Think back to Laine Hardy. Had to bow out early his first year in the competition. The next year, he had some experience under his belt and found his style…and won the whole dang thing!!!

  4. M’s Things says:

She definitely has enormous potential. She will be a star. I think Lionel did the right thing, though. You can’t push artistry too fast or it will burn out. She’s way too shy and unsure of herself right now, although the voice is there. She just needs someone to help her come out of her shell and find her power.

  5. billy says:

She does not seem ready…yet. However, I see a TREMENDOUS amount of potential!!

  6. Corvo Attano says:

Damn, Lionel actually made me cry. This team of judges has been positive reinforcement from the start, but Lionel took it to the next level. Entering this competition while having a celebrity background, drastically amplifies the already intense pressure of competing on this show. Lionel realizes this, and does what he knows is right, to protect this potential star.

  7. Mimi says:

Lionel’s “no” is a blessing. The control that AI has over its winners is toxic. This way she can be an independent artist on her own terms.

  8. Kathryn Shaw says:

Another Detroiter here, and Aretha Franklin was always the best. Motown’s success depended on their being able to develop a stable of outstanding singers. The stars of Motown knew that that was going to be their ticket away from poverty, poor housing and low paying jobs. Grace has an outstanding voice, and I don’t doubt that she spent a lot of time touring with her grandma. Lionel Richie is correct though that you just can not buy maturity. That impacts singing as well as all sorts of decision making. The American Idol program is a contest. Rather than develop talent, they are supposed to shed many excellent singers in their search for “the best”. At 15, Grace needs a mentor. She doesn’t need a situation where she will be tossed out as “not good enough to continue”.

  9. Marcos Ramos says:

He did the right choice, he absolutely knows what he’s doing

  10. beckitai says:

Lionel did the right thing! She needs more time to bring out the star in her. She’s a potential star. Sometimes we allow our emotions to crack our eggs before they’re ready to hatch. She still needs some more time in the incubation of stardom.

      Perfect

    • MaKenna Kennard says:

@Jessceka Parrish who sounded bad? Not trying to be mean to her but honestly I thought she was the worse person I heard..that had a chance to make it through. She just didn’t have any power in her voice and had lots of hesitation and just didn’t have personality in her voice… Not everything is about race..besides if anything she would have been pushed through because of her grandma (what happened with Katy) …

    • Jessceka Parrish says:

@MaKenna Kennard so other people who sound Rusty that got sent through didn’t need time n practice smh n Lonnie Richard hasn’t been black n a long time 🤨✌️

    • Jessceka Parrish says:

      @Rhonda Bush that’s what I said

    • Blue Lagoon says:

@Rhonda Bush omg… you drank the equity koolaid. sad.
