Atlas Gets a Grip | Boston Dynamics
It’s time for Atlas to pick up a new set of skills and get hands on. In this video, the humanoid robot manipulates the world around it: Atlas interacts with objects and modifies the course to reach its goal—pushing the limits of locomotion, sensing, and athleticism.

The movements are becoming so fluid and lifelike, but at the same time looks like a cartoon. Fascinating!
motion capture as a training set
@netgoblin incorrect. It’s a mix of both prerecorded and choice. The robot is told what it should do, and the controller interprets how to do it the best way possible, including balancing motions. In much the same way you don’t think about keeping your balance when you walk, you just think about where you want to go.
@Beta Meta probably too heavy for scaffolding
Ah yes, aNImAtIon
fluid and lifelike? Yeah ok buddy
This is so impressive. Been watching Atlas for years now, and the movement appears to get smoother every time I see it.
For all that this shows. I love the use of the arms for balance and momentum while jumping. It’s so natural and instinctive for us. But the idea that it took who-knows-how-many hours/days or months of programming to get right, just blows my mind.
Months of programming compared to millions of years of evolution. I’d say it’s a very low price.
I believe the “how to move/balance” is machine learning. Stringing together moves is human choreographed.
Maybe not programming 🤔, maybe learning 😯
The flip is just so clean and fluid
There was a time where I lamented the loss of Asimo.
Then you guys came around and filled the hole in my heart 1000 times over.
You guys are lighting our hearts ablaze while paving a beautifully inspired future.
Thank you Boston Dynamics
Not as cute as Asimo thought, yet
I like how it just throws the heck out of the toolbox and then does a backflip
Awesome

I’ve been following Boston Dynamic’s progress since early 2000s. It still amazes me every time BD makes a new improvement to their already incredible robots.
Keeps getting better and better lads. Both amazing and as always, terrifying!!
The mechanical movement precision is unreal!
