to be honest, this thing about the new dalai lama is a good plot for a netflix show

like tibets panchen lama is any less fake than chinas… All this reincarnation stuff is just BS

  3. ProjectThunderclaw says:

So we’re just going to ignore the fact that the Dalai Lama is an unelected, unchecked and unquestioned autocrat? Sure he’s pretty benevolent as dictators go, but let’s not forget that he became the ruler of several million people by virtue of a monk pointing at him and saying “yeah that guy”

  4. Keyshell says:

To be fair, reincarnation is nonsense anyways so it doesn’t matter if the Dalai Lama chooses to reincarnate again.

  5. Ken Shih says:

Very disappointed, on 3:29 the map on China also included Taiwan??? I know this mostly was an honest mistake but one that seems particularly ironic considering the subject of this episode was Chinese aggression towards other parts of the world.

Still, glad that you’re covering Tibet Independence. Love to see more

  6. ㄱㄱㄱ Yeah says:

This is a very one-sided video. Little do you know that Chinese government supported him in the early 1950s and gave him important roles in the government. It is later because of his will to isolate Tibet from China that caused difference in ideology which turned into major conflict. Please read up before commenting.

As a Chinese, i never thought there’s a day i’d become a so called 自干五 “self-equipped wumao” (aka a Chinese government advocator without getting paid by the government) but here it is:

PLEASE stop being naive John (and all the rest who likes jumping on this band wagon called “Free Tibet”. Do you want Tibet to go back to a slavery/religious country (because that’s how Tibet like back then)? And isn’t it a self-evident truth that a secular country is always better than a religious one?? (I’m talking about you middle east 🙂 And yes, I’d rather live in a communist country than a Muslim one) (and FUCK all the political correctness). I think HHDL didn’t let you know how they practiced Buddhism back when he was there in Tibet and you might find yourself enlightened (a spoiler for you: there were a lot of fucking and raping invovled, which were totally different from what HHDL’s corny tweets you people instead thought inspiring but in fact, hypocrite).

And what you know (or what you thought you know) about the history and current affairs of Tibet is just as manipulated and one-sided as what you thought you know about Afghanistan, Iraq, south Sudan and : You thought those people lived a too bad life under those notorious dictators so your governments sanctioned/bombed/invaded every and each of them with an indulged and condescending self-righteousness, and how did that work out for those poor people, and you?? With millions of natives murdered, terrorists flying planes to skyscrapers, floods of refugees, and president Trump (for fuck sake), I do hope you learned your lessons, which is to leave Tibetans alone from your helping hand!!

Just one question: with this show’s mighty power in fact-based research, why wasn’t there any information on what life was like before the 1950s? Tibet has a thousand year long history, during most of which they formed close ties with the central Chinese government and people of multiple ethnicities see Tibet as their home. One such famous bonding dated back to the Tang Dynasty (~800 AD).
Tibet is not some hollow ideal that comes into being only in the latter half of the 20th century and mostly for people who are tired of capitalism to find “chicken soup for the soul” from.
The issue is historically complex and nuanced, and affects neighbouring Chinese provinces as well. Painting the issue in caricature-sque lighting will only adds to prejudice. I thought this show valued fact over emotion. I was sourly wrong.

Yes people setting themselves on fire is tragic. But a balanced reporting would have included terrorist attacks by the Tibeten separatists in recent years that killed by the dozens.

Yes it is wrong that the Chinese government meddles with the religious regeneration process, but the report failed to mention how Tibet was ruled before the 1950, when the communist party took power. It was ruled on SLAVERY. There was only slaves ( ordinary people) , slave owners, and the Dalai Lama who legitimised and endorsed such slavery.
No. Tibet is not, and shouldn’t be a product of a yellow fever dream. I’d never thought I’d end a comment for Last Week Tonight with these words but here we go:

  11. ThaHappySauce says:

what a poignant interview! John definitely didn’t hold back with the real questions and the dalai definitely embodies the institution of Buddhism well, showing no hate. definitely woke af

  12. jojoinhere says:

fun face: Tibet have been a part of China longer than the history of America. Asking China to leave Tibet alone is like asking white american to leave america

  13. visky Ye says:

Typical ignorance. When you talk about human rights, please note the basic data first. The literature rate, infant mortality rate, the life span. Pre-chinese Tibet is a haven and it is not a hell as worse as Somalia. Let alone the long history of Chinese tribute system. Do judges with limited source, not asking real Tibetans living in Tibet is just brainwash, same as CPC government.

  15. Ruby Doobie says:

The Dalai Lama just wants his slaves back. What’s wrong with that?

  16. Eurobubble70 says:

the same guy who freaks out about trump saying nice words about putin is doing a promo show for a cult that held an entire country in slavery…

  17. David Li says:

I don’t think John Oliver painted a fair picture here, has he even been to Tibet ? I lived there for over 10 years although I would say things are not perfect it is a huge improvement compare to the 1950’s. Rigourous social class system has been brought down. Public Health public school has been implemented. Woman are allowed to eat tables with their husbands , can tend school and can no longer be sold as livestocks. Slavery has been abolished also bet u didn’t know The largest slave owner/trafficker at 1950’s is the Dalai Lama him self whom gets 10% of every transaction even when the thing being sold is a human. Today the people who live at Tibet don’t want slavery and oppression to come back with the Dalai Lama.

  18. Toogii Saruultuya says:

im a mongolian. and i guess the thing about the horse milk is true haha i drink it myself and really enjoy it. dont expect it to smell and taste like cow milk because you let it sit for a while

  19. Geesebees says:

Finally one NOT about trump or politics!

The Dalai Lama is like the exact opposite of Trump.
