Does Planet 9 Exist?
A planet has been predicted to orbit the sun with a period of 10,000 years, a mass 5x that of Earth on a highly elliptical and inclined orbit. What evidence supports the existence of such a strange object at the edge of our solar system?
Huge thanks to:
Prof. Konstantin Batygin, Caltech
Prof. David Jewitt, UCLA
I had heard about Planet 9 for a long time but I wondered what sort of evidence could support the bold claim: a planet at the very limits of our ability to detect one, so far out that its period is over 60 times that of Neptune. The planet 9 hypothesis helps explain clustering of orbits of distant Kuiper belt objects. It also explains how some of these objects have highly inclined orbits – up to 90 degrees relative to the plane of the solar system. Some are orbiting in reverse. Plus their orbits are removed from the orbit of Neptune, the logical option for a body that could have ejected them out so far. The fact that the perihelion is so far out suggests another source of gravity was essential for their peculiar orbits.

Imagine Planet 9 rotating around sun and alpha centauri system slingshot-ing to each system every 65million years
I think they should just call it planet 9
@John H Baumgaertner calm down
John H Baumgaertner you saw a stupid comment and that’s all you came up with? Try harder next time, he tried to be funny, you bring nothing here,
Guavas is the fruit with the highest vitamin C per cup in the planet
What if they find a planet just inside of planet “9”s orbit? Does that make it planet 10 or 9?
@ur mom that John guy deleted his comment I’m done ?

4:05 You can just tell how happy he was asking that. Thats so cool to meet him
At first, I thought it was sarcasm
Derek Muller : Literally Anything
Konstantin : That’s a great question!
“that’s a great question”
-Konstantin about every question
Student: “Sir, why do you always start off with “That’s a great question?”?”
Professor: Thats a great question
Common trick to give yourself a second to consider the question and make a better answer.
@Cory Hawkins The thing is I didn’t
The guys a prof what did you expect
What if aliens covered planet 9 in vantablack just to screw with us.
then we would observe it as a complete absence of light… but we’re not looking for that so yeah, we’d probably miss it.
Bruh momento
Theres no oxygen in it tho
@ZeDzHyPe 74 I’m sorry, what does oxygen have to do with vantablack.
@Damien Green dont worry bout me im just tripping ya know???
derek: is that a great question?
prof: that’s a great question
Inter-splicing the clips of the skeptic absolutely made this video!
10k cubic AU
sure, thats something a normal person can imagine
Home video
im extremely annoyed that he didnt mention it in bald eagles per ar15
Astronomical unit, it the distance between the sun and the earth which is 93 million miles, so just copy and paste the distance between the sun and earth 10 times and thats what you got.
@SAHM that’d be thousands if not millions foot ball fields
The oort cloud is about 100,000 AU: astronomical units, and distance from the earth to the sun is 1 AU, so the oort cloud is about 100,000 times the distance from the earth and the sun.

An old Chinese saying , so beautiful to see actual scientific arguments done in person , this could be history
@Grigor Kyokuto I believe the word you’re looking for is “pseudo” (yeah, it’s weird). “sudo” is a computer utility commonly found on linux machines to run a command as another user. https://xkcd.com/149/
@Zhi Shen Aung I could confirm that. That was not the style of Confucius. Source: I, read the Analects of Confucius before. edit: for those interested could search the quote in QuoteInvestigator.
Funny you mentioned that because I have never heard of that quote
give me back my profile picture
Except all you need is food and the cat will find you. No such luck with Planet 9.

This really made me laugh.
Mine, but not yours
Is it possible that planet 9 is a rogue planet captured by the Sun?
@So Cal Bee Guy No he’s not. For planet 9 to exist it pretty much must have exact predicted mass and orbit otherwise all the things that “show us” it “is real and exist” would go away..
@S. I see.
If such a large object with a corresponding orbit would come “in our lifetime” then it would be close enough already to be seen easily. That speaks against a brown dwarf.
@HappyBeezerStudios – by Lord_Mogul We don’t know the speed or the location. A recent NASA panel voiced the possibility of a brown dwarf just outside our solar system. Space is large, and someone above did point out something about needing a mathematically accurate prediction. Without that, maybe it is not being seen. There are parts of Google Sky that are censored. Also, the Vatican’s radio telescope “Lucifer” was shut down not too long ago under very mysterious circumstances amid rumors of this subject. One may question why the Church is so interested in astronomy in the first place.
The idea I read, at least ten years ago, was that IX was a planet pushed out by Jupiter. The widely held belief, at that point, was that all of the gas giants initially formed much closer together but Jupiter, being such a huge bitch, disrupted their orbits to the extent that they spread apart. When Jupiter was pushing Saturn, Uranus and Neptune out of its way it may have ejected another world completely.

Pluto: “Sad planet noise”
Pluto = good
@Jonathan Janzen I’m not saying to memorize every object in the solar system, just having more children know about Ceres, Haumea, Pluto, Makemake, and Eris could be interesting. That’s only five objects. Not 300.
pluto is my favourite planet i am also ruled by pluto
@Julien Da Coolien I think the children interested in it will go find out about it. No point in having people know things they won’t ever need or is interested in.
*”sad dwarf planet noise”* FTFY
Can we call it planet ten to confuse people the same way Microsoft/apple did
Planet 10+
@yetinother there are other objects in the Kuiper Belt bigger than Pluto yet it should still be a planet?
John Jones you beat me to it
YOURE SO FUNNY

Can great questions exist?
Professor: That’s a great question.
? V: *”Who’s responsible for finding the Kuiper belt?”*
Prof.: *”I found the Kuiper belt.”*
I guessed Al Gore.
David Turner Nah, Al Gore found Climate Religion.
*Plot twist: Planet 9 is just a Magic 8 Ball on steroids.*
Lol
All signs point to yes!
