I was skeptical about the FF7 remake, but this trailer shows a lot of soul, and I’m happy to see lots of silly stuff coming back.

I shouldn’t be, but I am genuinely surprised that just the in game graphics completely outclass Advent Children’s CGI.

    • EMK says:

@Shun Kun Actually everything is rendered in realtime in engine.

    • ArtofZen Digital says:

Most of the scenes in this video were in game cut scenes with pre-calculated lighting. The actual graphics aren’t better than advent children at all. They look on par with, or a little behind what’s present in the last tomb raider.

This is in no way meant to downplay the incredible work Square’s done here, given how big the undertaking was from a standpoint of making fully 3D versions of flat rendered backgrounds. There’s really nothing that’s mind blowing from a purely technical standpoint here though when you compare it to God of War or the newest Last of Us footage on PS4.

In terms of Final Fantasy though, Final Fantasy 15 on Playstation 4/Pro had lower draw distances, more basic levels of detail, simpler antialiasing solutions and hair and fur rendering, and even the grass lacked the movement the Nvidia features on PC had. This game is using Unreal Engine 4 instead of the Luminous Engine Square used for Final Fantasy 15, largely because the Luminous Engine didn’t run well on consoles frame rate wise. The complexity of the Nvidia Game Works tools for real time fluid motion, grass, fur, fire, cloth and hair weren’t possible even on the Xbox one X or PS4/Pro due to the AMD hardware they use, so this makes a lot more sense as Unreal Engine 4 is more console friendly. It’s not as impressive as the PC version of Final Fantasy 15 with true 4k textures and game works enabled, and even then, there are moments in the last Tomb Raider on PC from a real time lighting and effects perspective that are impressive even now.

Again, it doesn’t take away from Square’s accomplishments here, but when Final Fantasy 7 Remake is competing visually on a console with the forthcoming Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Us 2, and the already released God of War reboot and Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s fair to say that while it may look great, it’s not exactly at the same level in terms of the real time gameplay elements. Now when it comes to pre-calculated in game cutscenes, Final Fantasy 7 Remake has very few peers.

You do realize the absurdity of your comments. AC is a 14/15-year old CGI film, and it looks laughably bad when you compare it to, say, Rocket on the Marvel Films, or Thanos. Hell, even Gollum from the LOTR films looks a hell of a lot better than AC, and that CGI work was done 5/6 years earlier! It would be an embarrassment for Square Enix if their ingame graphics hadn’t surpassed AC’s once the PS4 arrived.

    • Different Same says:

Just imagine how it’ll look on the PS5

  12. Brian G says:

Aerith looks attractive in that red dress ?

  13. Gendo3s2k says:

“I’ve got your lethal force right here!”

  14. Axis says:

Here I am, marveling at how Cloud’s oversized sword actually couldn’t be drawn because of the narrow corridor. XD

  15. The Freedyshow says:

There is far too many things they have done so well in this. It is not just a remake, Its a re-imagining a re-birth. FF7 Rebirth would have been a better name imo. I cant wait for this. FF7 holds so many memories for me. That game got me into RPG’s and I would not be the gamer I am today without this game. I still play it to this day and It will forever be special to me. By the looks of it, this is going to be special to so many, many more people.

    • Nick Fedorov says:

Reunion is better on every level.
      It’s already taken, though.

    • Eagle Strike says:

Agreed. This isn’t just some money grab by a “struggling” big time game company, this is the guy who made one of the most famous and iconic games of all time getting to redo it in modern technology.

  16. The Nothing Nobody says:

This trailer is all well and good, but is ‘this guy are sick’?

    • tailedgates9 says:

Oh my god, imagine IMAGINE if they kept that in. X’D

    • DV says:

Considering they have voice acting that line would be both awkward and hilarious.

    • AlexRN says:

The Nothing Nobody that’s a gramatical error that for all intents and purposes was corrected in every version after the original PS1 game (even the 1998 PC port had it corrected).

Now about this “Let’s mosey” business. Now THAT one they should totally 100% include because it’s not only grammatically correct but it was also never purged, ergo, it’s canon.

    • AlexRN says:

DV and the joke would only sorta work in English. Japanese and other language speakers would not get it. I wouldn’t hold my breath on them keeping it. But “let’s mosey” they better include!

    • Jacques Jones says:

@AlexRN Who cares if it wouldn’t work in other languages? It didn’t exist in other languages to begin with. By the same token, what does it matter if it was later corrected? It’s a part of the lore of the game, and it’s not like it would take much to just have the line voiced.

  17. Patrick Wick says:

We were *this* close to seeing how hilarious the cross-dressing cloud will be.

  18. mostmelon says:

Aww, little toad Cloud has a little baby Buster Sword.

  19. Flegan777 says:

Holy buttercakes. Can’t wait to see and hear Red XIII now.

  20. Lily Flower says:

Tifa and Aerith are both so perfect in their own way.
