“King” lyrics

We argue in the kitchen about whether to have children
About the world ending and the scale of my ambition
And how much is art really worth
The very thing you’re best at
Is the thing that hurts the most

But you need your rotten heart
Your dazzling pain like diamond rings
You need to go to war to find material to sing
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King

I need my golden crown of sorrow
My bloody sword to swing
My empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King

But a woman is a changeling
Always shifting shape
Just when you think you have it figured out
Something new begins to take
What strange claws are these
Scratching at my skin
I never knew my killer would be coming from within
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King

I need my golden crown of sorrow
My bloody sword to swing
I need my empty halls to echo with grand self-mythology
Cos I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King
I am no mother, I am no bride, I am King

And I was never as good
as I always thought I was
But I knew how to dress it up
I was never satisfied, it never let me go
Just dragged me by my hair
and back on with the show

I feel like it’s tongue-in-cheek, about how nowadays so many people are obsessed with fame and ambition, for some kind of glory. I mean I also don’t want to be a mother or a bride, but that part of the song makes me cringe a bit. I love all her music but this one I didn’t get. Maybe it will grow on me.

  3. Whitney Avalon says:

This gave me actual goosebumps. Love the lyrics, the harmonies, the visuals!

    • Luis Daniel Valladares says:

  5. Thepi5cean says:

When she sings “But you need your rotten heart, Your dazzling pain like diamond rings, You need to go to war to find material to sing” it reminds me how us artists often lean on pain to create meaningful art. It’s a wicked trade-off that renders us emotionally exhausted, but at the end of the day it gives us the catharsis we need to do it all again. ❤️

  6. Jameshia Sampson says:

I love how raw and straightforward this video is; no more beating around the bush– she’s a full-on witch. I mean KING. I love that she’s not chasing after the guy or wrestling with herself or crying bc she misses him or second-guessing letting him go or ashamed that she’s taken him back. I smiled when I heard his neck snap bc it symbolized finality. She doesn’t need to do what she did before, she can celebrate and dance and love her career without guilt or longing. Or maybe I’m completely off base but that’s my takeaway.

    • RUNE says:

@Ella Ho I feel like ‘king’ is quite fitting. I did wonder about it at first, but I feel like this song is about expectations put on women by surroundings/society because of just that, being a woman. Even a Queen is subjected to those expectations, expectations a King (or men in general) doesn’t have/has less of, they are expected to be more oriented towards their careers. This doesn’t mean she is less of a woman, it just means she is done with those (and releasing herself) expectations that come with womanhood. Anyway, just my little take on this song and video! I hope this explanation makes you cringe a little less and enjoy this amazing song more!

    • pedro quint says:

Perhaps she named it King so she wouldn’t have another song called Queen (queen of peace)

    • Ella Ho says:

@searching997 I agree with you about the labelling of “king”. why not queen instead? it makes me cringe bit and it just contradicts the “female empowerment” aspect of the song.

    • Rachel Wainwright says:

      I didn’t hear any snap??

    • searching997 says:

@Jameshia Sampson interesting. It seemed to me that she hadn’t done that except maybe on HBHBHB. To me it seems she’d never held back from being herself. I always loved how down to earth and real she was, which is rare for someone that famous. I don’t know I’m just not feeling this one, it sounds egomaniacal, and why “king” as if saying “queen” is not enough? Anyway it’s not that serious, just love her music and wondering about the message

  7. To Have [S]EX With Me T[A]P Me!! says:

Florence is in another level, out of this world, we don’t deserve her, we don’t deserve her ART. What a masterpiece!

  8. ElfinShell says:

This release couldn’t have come at a better time for me. My dad is losing his battle with cancer and it’s been a month from hell.

But for 5 minutes and 19 seconds, Flo, you gave me a reprieve from the stress, and reminded me that I’m still a strong woman. Thank you. 💛

    • Easy says:

I was there some months ago and it was exactly Florence that I listened to and that helped me deal with pain, well, as much as I could. Sending love to you.

    • Valnawalangmalay says:

      Sending virtual hugs to youuu

    • That Evil Hag says:

Hey. I too suffered a world-breaking loss last year. You’re not alone. There is no absolute death in the cycles of nature. Just endless transformation and rebirth.

Thousands and thousands of us girl-Kings stand behind you.

    • lefu87 Williford says:

I’m so sorry. I lost a parent too 10 years ago. What got me through it was remembering that it never gets easier, you only get stronger.

    • phoenix72 says:

Sending hugs from a person who has been there.

  9. Catlin Stark says:

I can’t believe Florence just told us she was the Supreme. But also — goosebumps!! lots of crying!! an overflowing heart!! If this is the only good thing to come out of 2022, I’d still be so happy!!

    • no drugs for breakfast says:

@Joe Young they were referring to the comment

    • Joe Young says:

@Starlight Pudding she didn’t write the song your reading far to much into something that isn’t there , you do know this is an X factor style band created by a record company right !

    • Catlin Stark says:

@Starlight Pudding @Alan Bravo yes! The most powerful witch in the coven was called “the Supreme” and it was supposed to be a surprise who the next Supreme was and many witches fought for the title. This music video is almost like Florence is saying that SHE is the new Supreme! <3

  10. Diego RoLe says:
