Everything that was said about La La Land is exactly what I felt after seeing that film. That is why Moonlight won. Great upload guys!

La La Land is my favorite of the two, but Moonlight is the better of the two. I honestly loved both movies. Don’t hurt me

lol! 2 hours I’ll never get back. This should have been a black casted movie anyway. Jazz was so important at one point. Now its been reduced to pretty people with look good Hollywood problems. Ugh.

Moonlight doesn’t get a pass either. Strip away the nifty way it was filmed and you still got yet another ‘all black cast of course’ hood movie.

“Starring all of these people who would have been thanked had that guy from waterhouse cooper not been too busy taking selfies to keep track of the envelope” – Im dead! :’)

  14. Douglas Huber says:

I’m actually glad La La Land didn’t win the Oscar, even though I personally loved it. I feel like the reason it got so much Oscar buzz was because everyone believed it was basically a giant love-letter to Hollywood musicals. And in a way, it is, but the point of the movie is that the characters are letting their visions of Los Angeles as the fantasy land they know from movies get in the way of their true feelings, and the end of the movie features a much more realistic depiction of Hollywood (complete with traffic jams and none of the landmarks), because the characters are finally living in reality now. They made their dreams come true, but they had to work for it, rather than trying to live in complete bliss.

Honestly don’t get how big LaLa Land was.. I firmly believe it’s bc of Emma stone and Ryan gosling. Even when they showed trailers that showed nothing, ppl were going crazy as if they’ve never seeen any good musical before. The story was downright obvious, no character development, and songs had maybe 2 songs that weren’t musically complex or full of talent, but rather simple but still catchy. I have to give credit to the cinematography though. It was vibrant and pretty. Best part of movie: beginning, audition song, and ending. Everything else was mediocre.

  19. GreenGretel says:

As a massive cinephile who loves (or at least has a love/hate relationship with) musicals, I’d vehemently disagree with characterizing La La Land as a ripoff – this vid kinda equates borrowing/allusions/nods (which all of the great directors do – borrowing from, riffing, and commenting on your influences is a key part of filmmaking) with ripping off, even though I can’t think of one American musical which tonally, stylistically, and narratively functioned the way La La Land does, or fused a modern sensibility with melancholy-laced nostalgia/callbacks to its genre forbears in such a way. I also think it’s significantly better than any recent masturbatory, in-love-with-itself Hollywood film (certainly way superior to The Artist), and I’d argue its take on Hollywood/L.A./success is a lot more nuanced than its detractors give it credit for.

La La Land isn’t a perfect movie by any means, but it’s a special/nuanced/rich/cineliterate/beautifully scored & acted/phenomenally directed take on the genre, which seems to inspire a shitload of glib, cynical-for-the-sake-of-being-cynical reactions or outright misguided projections (that go beyond just not being ~into~ the film). I did appreciate that this Honest Trailer steered clear from some of the dumbest takes on this film, though (even if it indulged in the erroneous ‘La La Land is just a ripoff’ one) – and the beginning of the vid has some particularly insightful observations.
