I Built This from A 1972 Popular Mechanics Magazine Plan.
I dive into my collection of Popular Mechanics Magazines to build something from the distant past! I build an arbor press from scratch using some of my favorite tools. Then, I test it to see if it can press as hard as it claims. I demonstrate stick welding, drilling, and shimming.
Here are the tools I used:

I was in a band with a guy in college who had his mother’s original Bose Quadriphonic Stereo system from the 70s in perfect working order. There aren’t too many records set up for it: thank goodness for The Who.
One great side effect of Apple pushing for this new “spatial audio” feature is that you can listen to the “spatial” Atmos tracks on your home theater’s surround setup! It’s not just a gimmick for headphones with head tracking gyroscopes, it’s truly a successor to quadriphonic recordings.
A lot of people don’t realize this, since the marketing is so focused on “spatial” through stereo output devices like headphones, but the underlying mastering process that makes this possible is true multichannel surround sound music mixing. And you don’t even need to have Atmos equipment (for most Atmos tracks), since the platform can deliver a standard surround sound mix up to 7.1, which should always be generated by the Atmos mastering process as a side effect.
I had a Marantz quadraphonic receiver in the 70’s. It had a wired remote with a joystick that adjusted the balance. It was a really sweet system, but the only really good source I had was Quadrophenia by The Who.
The pink floyd collection is all you need.
I went to welding school in 2009 , i did the exact same press as an asembly test!!! , i guest my teacher got the idea out of this magasine,
I still got the thing, i used it last week to remove a ball joint , works great !
Go Fireball tool ! u’R the best !
it’s cool that you have made this as well
@Anonymous Armadillo wiil do , give me your e-mail
You’d be surprised how much modern stuff has been around loger than you think, you even get things that atre advertised as ‘new’ but are just from an old idea.
Maybee the designer built it with the jack at an angle, but the artist found it easier to draw it straight.
It was drawn at different angles
I wonder how many people have actually built this thing back then. Great video as always and what an honor to be part of it 😃
@Fixitall Paul I would imagine if it were built to spec from engineered drawings there would not be any more liability than if it were bought from a manufacturer. The drawings in the magazine appeared to be engineered considering they gave a max load rating. A lot of high school auto shops accept donated cars in as is condition without liability issues.
@bailey jerman Hush child. This is adult talk time.

Stop procrastinating on YT. Your latest video is from 2 months ago.
I’d love to see a build duplicating those old clamps! There an old well thought out design very functional! Maybe fire ball could even start selling them?
@SK Facilities you can get these from the big clamp manufacturers like bessey or piher…
I have some east german clones from before the wall came down which are probably easier to duplicate w/o legal troubles..
Agreed.
what brand are your drill bits?
If you don’t mind paying a little more, Drill Hog sells (maybe makes them, don’t know) very good bits and the extra cost is made up for with their “no questions asked” guarantee. If one of their drills breaks, they will replace it.
@oddjobbob I agree. Been using Drill Hog brand for years now. When I break one I just mail Billy the broken one and in a week or two I receive a new one. Pretty painless.

Thanks man, it inspired me to do the same press 😊👍
*Let’s see it*
I didn’t hear him mention the old roofing metal on the floor. That is probably one of the cheapest best ways to protect your concrete from the cutting torch activities. not to mention the large drops taking a chunk out after every cut. Another idea is to use a empty 55 gallon metal barrel and cut over it and let it collect everything and that avoids a lot of cleanup time.
@Matt Berg That’ll just turn into dust. You can get more, but the other solutions are longer lasting.
@LocustSaddle obviously. But cheap, available and quiet. Scoop up the old and put down the next.
Jason, I just want to say I really appreciate the more traditional build on this project.
It would have been incredibly easy for you to redesign a couple parts and do a ton of water jet work.
The cutting torch plays the role of a manual water jet in this build!
I bet you get a lot of use out of that. Well done and presented. Thanks for the plug.
