I Got An 18th Century Makeover

I Got An 18th Century Makeover

Finally, the video we’ve all been waiting for… the one where I get to return to Colonial Williamsburg after ~20 years!! As some of you guys might know, I bring up Colonial Williamsburg *a lot*, as it left a big impression on me as a child – so we decided to make the trip to the historical town of Williamsburg, VA to get an 18th century makeover (hair, makeup, and outfit!) and explore their living history museum, in costume. A big thank you to Abby Cox & Nicole Rudolph for helping out with our final look, and thank you to Colonial Williamsburg for inviting us!

  2. NotYourMommasHistory says:

Thank you Safiya for the shout out, and for shining a light on historical interpreters and tradespeople! 😍

  3. Olivia B says:

fun fact: similar to colonial shoes, pointe shoes (the hard ones ballet dancers wear) are also not made for a left or right foot specially and are broken in for each foot as they’re worn!

    • Ulisse DaZante says:

Shoes were still ‘ambidextrous’ during US Civil War, 80ish years later.
And with tactics requiring a lot of marches (and lot of wear and tear on shoes), think how it would be to get a new pair of army leather booties to broke while chasing Lee thru Virginia or Pennsylvania.

    • Olivia B says:

@ryebread375 _ that’s so cool that you could do that! i have two different shaped feet, so i probably couldn’t, plus i’m new-ish to pointe so i probably won’t need to for a while

    • ryebread375 _ says:

@Olivia B I see super interesting! When I broke down the sides of my shoe I had switched feet to improve to longevity of them

    • Olivia B says:

@Ada Muffoletto mine i’ve had since december, then again i only do pointe once a week and it’s my first pair

    • Olivia B says:

@ryebread375 _ oh shit i didn’t know that! i mean i don’t think mine personally could be bc my fitter made some foot-specific adjustments to each shoe but for ppl who go through them fast that’s handy

  4. Kirk Northrop says:

Safiya saying “colonial Williamsburg” would be a dangerous drinking game.

  5. Yama S says:

SAFIYA I’M GLAD YOU GOT TO EXPERIENCE THIS. Also, thank you so much for not glossing over the fact that slavery was a thing during colonial times.

  6. Stephanie Bria says:

Saf being exasperated at Tyler’s bad jokes is seriously the best representation of long term relationships I’ve ever seen

  7. Abby Cox says:

This was such a fun time and I can’t wait to hang out and plot more historical clothing shenanigans with you 😭❤️🎉

    • RoseBrier897 says:

I love how you looked like a historically accurate version of Eliza Schuyler! Stunning as always!

    • MsSouthernSlang says:

      Yay! We want more.

    • Curious Firefly says:

I love the scenes from the Mantua shop – I’m pretty sure I recognize it from ‘historical’ pictures of Abby and Nicole working there.

    • CrazyLittleWorlds says:

      Gosh, looking forward to those!

    • Crystal Barfoot says:

This was amazing Abby! My daughter who is 20, is also an Historian (studying at JMU) and also named Abby would lovvve this. Just subscribed to you and shared with her. Annd- We live 30 min away from Williamsburg!

  8. Capricorn K says:

Respect for the amount of history is always embedded in Safiya’s videos…and I will be checking out “NotYourMommasHistory” immediately.

  9. Stephanie Bria says:

the fact that Safiya still managed to fit the color black into her outfit is insane

  10. Peardabear Films says:

“Hey What’s Up! What do you buy?” ABSOLUTELY KILLED ME!! The attitude and the head bob was sooo funny!!
