Ice Cream Expert Guesses Cheap vs Expensive Ice Creams | Price Points | Epicurious

In this episode of ‘Price Points’, Epicurious challenges ice cream expert Jeni Britton Bauer to guess which one of two ice creams is more expensive. Jeni breaks down vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, strawberry ice cream, coffee ice cream, mint chocolate chip ice cream, and birthday cake ice cream. For each flavor, Jeni looks at, smells, and taste tests before guessing which ice cream costs more. Once the prices are revealed, she explains why.

Her hair is very on brand for an ice cream expert. I love it!

  7. Airdoo says:

The expert owns her own line of ice cream, and it’s awesome.

    • Sam Saad says:

Most of the experts from this series are makers of their product of expertise. The meat expert makes sausages, the chocolate expert owns Guittard Chocolate Company, the coffee expert produces his own coffees etc

    • AProperNoun says:

It’s cool that Epicurious doesn’t turn these videos into advertisements for the experts’ brands, too. I mean if Jeni wanted to advertise her ice cream brand I’m all for it–Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream lives up to its name–but it’s cool that these videos really are completely about learning what kind of work goes into a food product and what things can indicate a quality product.

This is one of the Epicurious series’ that I really love! Someone with the knowledge to let us know where the big food companies are cutting corners or trying to fool us. Thanks! #LeGourmetTV

    • dusso4231 says:

LeGourmetTV Although they are “cutting corners”, you get what you pay for and some people cant afford the extra cost that comes along with all of that extra attention and work. I agree 100% though. Love this series.

  9. Kristian says:

I like how you guys at Epicurious has gotten more confidence in these videos as we go and now make 22 minute videos! thanks you so much for that vote of confidence!

    • That guy who cannot abide says:

Same. The whole ‘youtube creators that follow YT tips for making short videos’ thing just panders to the audiences that most channels don’t really want.

  10. Reuben Fatoye says:

The day the experts get a guess wrong is the day I’ll cease to exist

  11. iVolkswagen says:

She has her own ice cream brand that is sold where I live. I’m surprised she didn’t mention it. I find that very respectful! It means she truly cares about the medium.. not the money. You can tell that in how she explains the differences. Kudos!

  12. Daniella Tyokova says:

I need to know who is the artist behind the gorgeous backgrounds! They’re always such a delight to the eye

  13. Emily Black says:

She looks exactly like an ice cream expert is supposed to look like. She looks like the ice cream themed side character in a children’s board game.

  14. Starfruit Seed says:

Im lactose intolerant, glad i can know what ice cream will be worth getting a stomach ache over

    • bee pot says:

I’ve had some really delicious lactose free, almond milk, and coconut milk ice creams! It’s nice that there is a market.

    • Logan Waltz says:

What’s the place that makes it in front of you and freezes it with liquid nitrogen? They have non-dairy that is very good.

    • Axel Drans says:

I recently became lactose intolerant and was perfectly okay to stop eating milk made icecream. Why? Because I was already eating better icecream.
If you want richer flavor for less money, go non-dairy for ice cream, and especially go for soy milk ice creams, although cashews are runner ups. Generally, non-dairy ice creams have more flavor because they’re not drowned in… well, milk. Many dairy ice creams can taste just like they came out of the milk jug, which is *not* something you want regardless of how good it looks.

    • Green Wren says:

@Salty Support They can be, I had some great vegan ice cream recently. It was lemon ice cream using soy milk and it was super creamy.

    • Donavan Stanley says:

I buy a pint and eat it one spoon a day.

  15. Nicolle says:

She looks like the fairy god mother of ice cream ohmygodness

  16. BrunchStore says:

Amazing casting by Epicurious on this series. Every expert is a delight to listen to, and don’t diss cheaper products.

    • Giovanni Serrano says:

BrunchStore This woman actually dissed the more expensive product for being way more expensive than it should have been, which I thought was really awesome.

    • BrunchStore says:

Which I loved about her too. There’s an obvious difference between mass produced factory ice cream, and more homemade style ice cream. But it gets to a point where the bells and whistles don’t add to the ice cream experience. I could hear her talk about ice cream all day.

  17. Andre Cruz says:

This has been the most I learned in an episode of this series. I would have never known so much would go into making something you mostly just eat without even thinking about it.

  18. JanPospisil42 says:

    – every expert

  19. Stephanie Morgan says:

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. I love that they appreciate and sometimes recommend the cheaper product, because it’s still a good product and maybe what you need for a situation.

  20. Tapiture says:

I love how all the experts in these videos are so charismatic and cool.
