I just don’t think that he should have gotten physical at all. He was initially laughing at it, showing that it truly was a mild joke–until he saw Jada was upset. It would have been better to have came back with a quip or other joke but he let his emotions take over. Props to Chris for keeping his cool and literally rolling with the punches and continuing the show professionally.
@Hmmm, that’s interesting awesome? That’s the word we’re going with? 🙄
I have been intrigued at how much this slap has taken over the airwaves. I think I subconsciously the world feels helpless at what Russian is doing in Ukraine. We are using this incident as a way of showcasing how the public can unite to show we are truly decent without nuclear repercussions.
Im amazed that people don’t believe it was staged
@sct11s45 Except it is a comedy show. Or rather, a roast. EVERYONE knew that they will be made fun of, hence the moment of roasting the guests.
For those that think Will Smith is one of the oppressed, just witnessed all the privilege he has. The crowd giving a standing ovation signals how much of a bubble he lives in.
@Homebrew VR agreed

Yeah. While it’s okay to defend the honor of your family, I think he is right to say they could’ve discussed/handled it in the back. I doubt he can get in that much trouble for it, gladly, but -and maybe I think this bc of my personality- there were many other ways he SHOULD HAVE handled it. It is a bad precedent.
The dude he is talking to literally talked a lot whist still having the ability to say nothing at all
@CHL Lol you’re trying to tell me that I’m “just like Rogan” all I said to you was that I agree with Rogan in one respect and the other guy on another now you’re just taking it personally lol. So based on this 1 disagreement, you automatically know what my critical thinking skills are like? This is what I mean. You don’t seem to like people disagreeing with your take on the matter.
@VirgilFlowers I got the impression that Joe kept cutting off his guest all the time, though.
@Leone Guardo how am I forcing to people to conform when I haven’t suggested that anything is correct or incorrect? That’s not even the point of the entire division. Joe asked for his opinion and when he begins to break things down from other peoples point of view Joe can’t understand and doesn’t care; IE Joe shouldn’t have asked if he didn’t want a discussion. This is the same reason the average person can’t think critically, they can’t remove their belief system from a discussion and analyze something. Notice 90% of comments on here saying “big man talk too much, he dumb, me right.”
@cbikle 😂😂😂
If Will Smith had even a tenth of the self-control that Chris Rock displayed in that situation I’m sure he’d be enjoying his award a lot more than he is now. Amazing display of control from Chris to carry on and mitigate the situation the way he did.

Oh Chris wanted to, he literally had to stop himself, he said something “oh i could” but then didn’t finish that sentence 🤔
Chris could have torn them apart live on TV but chose not too, that earned my respect, but I’d still love to hear him rip them in a special or something
Joe is on spot. All I was thinking when I saw this smack from my FAMILY home living room was , why should I have to see this. Will 100% should of took this outside the Oscars.

Joe was completely on the money about Smith. Especially the part about Smith being caught up in his own ego i.e. he’s an action hero and he’s a “real man” who doesn’t let anybody say something bad about his wife. Obviously, Smith is actually a fragile man who lacks the maturity and self control to deal with a emotionally difficult situation in an appropriate way. BTW you can bet that if he can act that way on international TV, its very likely he acts that way at home.
I just gotta question if he would have that same energy if Mike Tyson or Dwayne Johnson told that joke.
In an ideal scenario …
Chris would have paused for a few more seconds, taken his time to take a longer, harder look at and into Will’s face, into his soul … realising that this slap had nothing to do with him or the joke he had told. He would have seen that this wounded man was lashing out at him because he can’t lash out anywhere else.
Then he would have taken a few slow but firm steps forward, opened his arms and asked Will in a calm and sincere way if he needed a hug …
A needle drops, everybody hears it, but nobody cares.
Will, realising that Chris had seen into his soul and recognised the pain he’s carrying and masking, already had forgiven him this stupidity, would have released an all telling, never before publicly heard sigh, breaking out in tears and stepping onto the stage again … but now in a very different manner: released of all of it’s outer tension, taking heavy steps towards Chris, a walk of the truest embodiment of an apology.
The two men stepping into each others arms … hugging. A big brother (Chris) taking in his little brother (Will). Not speaking, only hugging. The room is dead quiet. Nobody cheers, nobody claps. Everybody holds their breath, witnessing something human, something real and deep, witnessing real compassion – nobody is daring to ruin the moment. The hug takes maybe 15 seconds not more, not less. Then they break up the hug, Chris holds Will’s neck and says into the microphone: “Now go sit down, I have a winner to announce”.
All the tension in the room releases in a crowd-roar of cheering, clapping, crying. Standing ovations.
Jada’s face reflects a child like, humbled, deeper understanding of what her role in all of this was. Tears run down her softened face …
Her femininity re-emerges delicately and effortlessly.
… I could go on and on …
Love Joe , always respectful and listens to other during a debate but this other dude was brutal to listen to
Spot on Joe. Hope the academy gets its head out of its backside and rescinds the award and bans him in future from participation. Imagine any of us doing this on our jobs. Insane.
The thing I think Joe missed is how well Chris Rock handled the situation. He made a little joke, which is his job. Smith goes up and assaults Chris, and Chris actually stands there with his hands behind his back and doesn’t even drop the envelope he was holding. Then continued on without lowering himself. I really had to hand it to Chris Rock for continuing on the way he did and smoothing the situation over so well.
