Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Televangelists (HBO)

U.S. tax law allows television preachers to get away with almost anything. We know this from personal experience.

Our Lady of Perpetual Exemption will not be able to accept donations from Church supporters from the states of Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, or South Carolina. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Ah, Televangelists. As a Christian I’ve had to fight off these stupid
people for years, like Joel Olsteen and Beth Meyer. I’m thinking maybe that
we can keep tax law for Churches if the church has proof that it serves
it’s community in some physical way. That way people who just want a quick
buck would be sidelined by that, and even then would be doing good around

Here’s a fun little drinking game: Take a shot for every one of the seven
deadly sins you see in these televangelists. And you know it’s bad when I’m
an atheist and need to bring up their hypocrisy via that.

Best tax-exemption church since the church of NO MA’AM

  4. The Clueless Corner says:

Does that mean his show now has the tax benefits of a church? That’s a
    pretty smart business move.

  5. OCDude says:

Glad I’ve grown up in a church that is against the prosperity gospel.
‘Cause it’ obviously BS, and I hate it that these preachers are giving
Christianity a worse rep because of their greed. “The love of money is a
root of all kinds of evil.”

  6. Aezelll says:

I don’t really blame the televangelists. Sounds like they have a good
thing going. They figured out that there are a whole bunch of gullible
morons out there that will just cough up money and that the American
electorate is also too stupid to do anything about it. Hell, I should get
into it. Sounds like a good racket. If you give money to these people you
    have only yourself to blame.

America is surreal. Is it more surreal then Russia? It’s a good question…

  10. Joshua Lopez says:

So happy to be atheist right now, but I am still obligated to go to church
every sunday (I live in Texas with my parents and there is a church on
every corner in my town) and watching my step father put $20 in the baskets
every week makes me cringe at the thought that his indoctrinated mind is
being exploited for monetary gain, too bad he’ll never see it. I am so
happy that I never fall into these groups of people that blindly give money
    to these creeps.

  11. Isaiah Ammar says:

This was a good video, but now a ton of atheists are just commenting like
“hurrr look at me guyz im smarter than u” like we don’t care. Cool, you’re
a “smart” atheist. Nobody gives a fuck.
