Man falls off Motorcycle

Man falls off Motorcycle

This guy merged onto the I-80E (Sacramento, CA) on his motorcycle as we were driving in the fast lane. As he merged, his bike would shake and wobble. He sometimes would only have one hand on the handle bars while it was shaking!! We couldn’t figure out why it was shaking, but we noticed it would only do it once he hit high speeds. We paced him for 5-10 miles after watching him “almost” loose control (about 5 or 6 times), so I got my phone out, thinking “its only a matter of time before he crashes” and I wanted the video as evidence in case anyone else got hurt. Sure enough the very moment I get my phone out, happens to be the time he loses control. We pulled over immediately…..called 911, and help the man (and his bike) off to the side of the road as quickly as possible. He did walk over to the right shoulder by himself. His face was really mashed up (his nose looked broken) and arms covered in blood. Crazy road rash!!! I still wonder how he’s doing 🙁
Oh, and the sirens you hear in the background aren’t because he’s being chased by the cops….my kids were watching peppa pig…..it was just a coincidence 😉

I have a bike that starts doing that above 70, and it’s the front tire in that case… because others with the same tire have reported the same problem. It starts very gently and gets worse the faster you go. So the smart person would SLOW DOWN. But Harley riders… well, I won’t point out the obvious.

Personally I’ve ridden that stretch of freeway and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit to find out the crash was partially caused by the poor condition of the road surface. It’s one of the worst stretches if not the worst on I80 in Sacramento. It’s so bad that I will ride all the way around town to avoid it most days. There are deep grooves and very uneven pavement. The cagers don’t have a clue because they’re on 4 wheels and it’s not unsafe for them. I knew it was only a matter of time a bike would go down on that freeway. It looks like an older road king so if his tires and suspension were worn that definitely could contribute to the loss of control. Death wobble should not occur on a long straight stretch of road. It’s caused by the side to side or lateral movement of the rear swingarm when cornering at high speeds. If the swingarm bushings, rear shocks, or springs are worn it’s more likely to occur. Knowing that road I think there’s a strong possibility he had a mechanical issue that was exposed when he rode on that substandard surface. My two cents worth.
