The globe-spanning conflict between otherworldly monsters of mass destruction and the human-piloted super-machines built to vanquish them was only a prelude to the all-out assault on humanity in Pacific Rim Uprising.

John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) stars as the rebellious Jake Pentecost, a once-promising Jaeger pilot whose legendary father gave his life to secure humanity’s victory against the monstrous “Kaiju.” Jake has since abandoned his training only to become caught up in a criminal underworld. But when an even more unstoppable threat is unleashed to tear through our cities and bring the world to its knees, he is given one last chance to live up to his father’s legacy by his estranged sister, Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi)—who is leading a brave new generation of pilots that have grown up in the shadow of war. As they seek justice for the fallen, their only hope is to unite together in a global uprising against the forces of extinction.

Jake is joined by gifted rival pilot Lambert (The Fate of the Furious’ Scott Eastwood) and 15-year-old Jaeger hacker Amara (newcomer Cailee Spaeny), as the heroes of the PPDC become the only family he has left. Rising up to become the most powerful defense force to ever walk the earth, they will set course for a spectacular all-new adventure on a towering scale.

Pacific Rim Uprising is directed by Steven S. DeKnight (Netflix’s Daredevil, STARZ’s Spartacus) and also stars Jing Tian, Burn Gorman, Adria Arjona and Charlie Day.

Ok,so let’s break down everything wrong with this trailer.
    1. Feeling of weight. Now pardon me if I sound like a billion other people when saying this, but unfortunately it is quite a prevalent issue,HOW IN THE FLYING FUCK ARE THE JAEGERS MOVING AROUND LIKE THAT?! It looks as if they’re hollow cardboard cut-outs in terms of weight. I don’t care if this is sci-fi,you have to at least TRY to have a hint of realism in there, otherwise you break the suspension of disbelief. And quite frankly,a 7000 ton,250 foot tall robot wouldn’t be able to do half this stuff without collapsing under it’s own weight. This looks like a freaking video game.
    2. The setting. In the first movie you were always in the dark and the rain. The only true daylight scenes are in the beginning and the end of the movie. This is supposed to convey humanity’s downward spiral towards the later half of the war,the twilight before the destruction of everything. The beginning is bright to signify humanity uniting and temporarily winning against the threat and the end…well ends with a sunrise to signify the beginning of a new era of peace. In this one it looks like a Michael Bay movie. No drama,no suspense, nothing, just bright sunny days to emphasize…idk. Also,in the first the darkness served a practical purpose as well, disguising some of CGI. Now don’t get me wrong, the CGI is amazing, but inevitably there are going to be parts that look crappier that others. But that’s the good thing about the darkness, that it hides these below average effects and let’s you fully enjoy a scene without breaking the immersion. In this one…I refer back to my video game point.
    3. The designs of the Jaegers themselves. These are incredibly generic designs for mechas. Aside from Gipsy Avenger, who’s already ripping off two existing designs, namely the OG Gipsy and Striker Eureka, none of them stand out. In the first one, each Jaeger had a unique design which told exactly who they were and what fuction they played. Cherno’s the tough bruiser,Crimson’s the nimble fighter,Gipsy is the heroic brawler and Striker’s the futuristic one. Now,all of them are the Striker Eureka archetype, except this time it’s uninspired and old.
And finally, this might be just a problem with the trailer but still:
4.The music. In the first you had booming orchestral themes evoking the epicness of the situation and a sense of grandeur. Here, you have a shitty ass pop song that sounds like a million others meant to just appeal to the kiddies that wanna be “lit” and “cool”.
It’s pathetic how much of a sellout this feels. Pacific Rim seems to be another franchise that’s succumbing to having it’s soul sucked by the corporate executives. And I really, really hope I’m wrong about this and it turns out alright, but as it is now…Cthulhu help us.

Godzilla 123 I love you. This is a comment that shows me there are actually people I can talk to with whom I will feel a reciprocation of intelligence understood and appreciated. Please. Marry me. I don’t care if you’re another straight guy. It doesn’t have to be gay.

The first might’ve been an objectively bad movie, but it was an extremely fun at that. It completely embraced every single cliche in the book with every fiber of it’s being and ran with it. This…it just looks like a Michael Bay slugfest, with some Power Rangers sprinkled in for good measure.
I criticize because I care,I don’t wanna see this franchise lose the one thing that made it a cut above the rest: it’s heart. It’s nerdy,anime-loving,lard-ridden heart.
