If you are a friend of mine and you’re like “Why am I hearing about this in a YouTube video” I’m sorry about that. I spread the news a bit, but I figured I’d let this do some of the heavy lifting for me.

Also, when I recorded this email, I didn’t have my full schedule, but now I do. My first treatment begins….drumroll please, literally as this video goes live. So, there’s a very good chance that I’m reading the comments right now while getting my first round of chemotherapy. I’ve also gotten my. PET/CT which showed that the cancer has not spread anywhere from its original location in my left armpit/chest area, which is very good news.

This sucks so bad, but I’m already learning so much…mostly about myself.

Reply with some good movie and media recommendations here. NO BUMMERS. Hank, as someone who found the film Big Bird Comes Home a little emotionally overwhelming (because Big Bird leaves home and gets very scared before, get this, eventually coming home again), here are my recommendations:
    1. All nine Fast and Furious movies in order (there are bummers but the bummers happen alongside, like, cars in space, so they do not feel like huge bummers)
    2. Harvey (zero bummers)
    3. Happy Gilmore (lowest stakes of any film ever made)
I love you. We all love you. You’ve got this. -John

Hank, I graduated this spring with an undergraduate degree in Biology. Without crash course, I would have never understood my love for science (especially since I grew up in a rural southern town). This community has such a special place in my heart and I am so appreciative of you. We are all rooting for you and are here to support you. Take care of yourself and give your body the time and space to rest while all of this is happening.

    The essential hospital kit:

    1. A fuzzy blanket. They shouldn’t take it away from you. No number of hospital provided blankets will ever keep you warm so bring your own favorite.
    2. Earplugs. It’s very hard to sleep in hospitals because there’s alarms going off all the time.
    3. Whatever food you think you can eat. It doesn’t matter if it’s healthy. It’s whatever you can keep down. Which won’t be the hospital food.
    4. House slippers if that’s your thing because the hospital socks are one size fits all with weird grippies on both sides. That being said don’t bring your own socks without grippies because you’ll slide and fall down.

And a sleep mask. You can also get sleep headphones that are soft and play white noise from them to sleep. And those hospital socks from Steven the ER guy. Does Awesome Socks Club make hospital grippy socks? They should

Thisss! Every last bit! Crazy how what you’ve said here mirrors almost exactly what my oncologist and his nurses said. Hank’s got this, just like we do! 🙂

Hank, just in case you see this, I want to say thank you for the last 8 ish years. You got me through high school and college and now I’m in medical school to become a doctor. Because of you, I will be able to help patients like you in a few years. You will get through this and we are all rooting for you <3

First of all, this won’t define you. My aunt was diagnosed with the exact same thing January 2021. She had 23 tumors in her body around her jaw, chest, liver, etc. she has struggled with chronic illness since the day she was born. She has fluid in her body that builds up in certain areas if she stands too long, and some of it permanently stays in her left hand making it much larger than the other. She’s a mother of 2. It honestly sucked seeing her go through chemo and it was hard to keep her spirits up. She fought and had some of the best doctors to do their job and help her. By July 1st of that same year, her treatment was done and she was cancer free. And now we are almost 2 years later and she is currently writing a book about her life and experience with all her illnesses. It’s gonna suck, but the support you get along the way keeps you going mentally so you come out the other side a stronger, wiser, more grateful individual. We’re here for ya Hank. Do only what you can muster and never push yourself. Just think, “it won’t be forever, it’s all just for right now and one day it’ll be over”. Besides, now you can catch up on all sorts of media/content that you may not have given yourself time to do before! You got it man.

Both my parents have had some kind of cancer. My mum had skin cancer, my dad had non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Both beat their respective cancers, both are still with us, and this was ~20 years ago. As you say, cancer treatment is awesome now. You got this man. 🙂 And if you need media recommendations, The Legend of Vox Machina, Treasure Planet, and The Chronicles of Narnia are some of my favorites.

Oh man this hits so so close to home. I have watched you and John for damn near 15 years and you guys are some of the few YouTubers I do hold close to my heart. Not to be here all weird and shit but just found out my mum *might* have ovarian cancer and holy smokes have I been struggling with it just as someone who is a close family member.

I can not imagine what y’all are going through but it scares the living daylights out of me. I am praying for you, I hope things get better and you beat this horrible plague we call cancer.

Please please pleaseeeeee take you time with making stuff and never feel like we, your loyal and loving community (bcz I know I’m not the only one with real love for you guys) will be here no matter what. We all love and care for you a tonne, just focus on getting better Hank!
