Starship | SN10 | High-Altitude Flight Test

Starship | SN10 | High-Altitude Flight Test

As early as Wednesday, March 3, the SpaceX team will attempt a high-altitude flight test of Starship serial number 10 (SN10) – our third high-altitude suborbital flight test of a Starship prototype from SpaceX’s site in Cameron County, Texas. Similar to the high-altitude flight tests of Starship SN8 and SN9, SN10 will be powered through ascent by three Raptor engines, each shutting down in sequence prior to the vehicle reaching apogee – approximately 10 km in altitude. SN10 will perform a propellant transition to the internal header tanks, which hold landing propellant, before reorienting itself for reentry and a controlled aerodynamic descent.

The Starship prototype will descend under active aerodynamic control, accomplished by independent movement of two forward and two aft flaps on the vehicle. All four flaps are actuated by an onboard flight computer to control Starship’s attitude during flight and enable precise landing at the intended location. SN10’s Raptor engines will then reignite as the vehicle attempts a landing flip maneuver immediately before touching down on the landing pad adjacent to the launch mount.

A controlled aerodynamic descent with body flaps and vertical landing capability, combined with in-space refilling, are critical to landing Starship at destinations across the solar system where prepared surfaces or runways do not exist, and returning to Earth. This capability will enable a fully reusable transportation system designed to carry both crew and cargo on long-duration, interplanetary flights and help humanity return to the Moon, and travel to Mars and beyond.

Given the dynamic schedule of development testing, stay tuned to our social media channels for updates as we move toward SpaceX’s third high-altitude flight test of Starship!

@Graeme Johnson Government is preparing for natural earth disaster. Massive asteroid cloud coming in, sloar flares, nuke wars etc. So NASA contracted with Musk so they can act in secret to create SPACE STATIONS to live in while we all roast in radiation caused by THEM. Those flimsy ships in NO WAY are going to mars. They are going to orbit the earth while PISSING ON OUR FLAMING BODIES and living it up with HOOKERS and drugs. Don’t forget, their commute to earth is 10 minutes. THATS why they self landing ships. Refuel for food and new HOOKERS. Why ELSE? To save MONEY? Since WHEN does the gov want to save money??? And MARS. Yea, MUSK want to go to Mars and live on worms and mushrooms and NEVER return to earth. Whatta load of $HIT. Prepare, something is coming. THEY ARE!

We just witnessed history being made.
    Amazing.

@Mohamed Orayith “Could someone explain what the history being made is !”

I’ll try but considering the tone of you question I doubt you’ll understand.

SpaceX is prototyping a massive rocket more powerful than Saturn V and both booster and upper stages will be recovered under propulsion and for relatively quick turn-around. Its Raptor engines are also the only full-flow staged combustion rocket engines ever used for flight.

What else? Starship will be able to refuel in LEO from a second Super heavy booster. SpaceX also purchased and is refitting two deep sea oil rigs for launch and recover with plans for many more in the future.

How long has SapceX been working on this? Hint: A fraction of the time NASA has been working on a super heavy lift vehicle that’s not reusable and right now is in deep trouble.

If this does pan out this will be looked back on as historic indeed. Based on what SpaceX has already accomplished I give it a pretty good chance for success.

@Irene smith He doesn’t have the money. His company only has the money so long as the government and private investors stay interested. Now I hope they solve the problems with these VTOL rockets, but if results aren’t produced over the next couple of years or decade, their investments might be pulled.

@TheGamingBrit Just because it’s stupidly over complex and doesn’t do the job (it exploded after all) that tech decades old managed to do doesn’t make this amazing or an achievement.

Can we have a different camera angle to get a sense of the speed

    • Wetrogreen says:

You can google “An infographic of a simulation of a suborbital flight of Starship” and there is a reddit post with detailed picture (infographic). Its just simulation, but you can get some sense of speed for sure. I believe I have seen flight profile analyses of SN8 and SN9 real flights but I cant remember where / cant find it now.

    • Milkshakman says:

I wish they went to the onboard camera towards the end of the descent like they did with SN8. It gives a good sense of how close the ground is approaching.

    • 15 Redstones says:

Everyday Astronaut, LabPadre, Nasaspaceflight all had their own independent streams. There’s a dozen camera angles already available.

      @Waseem Khan ROFL

    • 19grand says:

That gives you an idea of how money the military squander. Biggest military budget in the world by a mile. Completely unnecessary, but plenty of Americans seem to support it.

To build a space station on the moon will cost less than 50bn and will advance science and humanity. We hope.

I haven’t forgotten the hungry, the sick, the destitute. I want those issues to be resolved so that we can all explore space, inner and outer.

    • Unmannedair says:

@DON HUANG never mind the actual huge amount of cash flow their raking in by launching satellites in massive quantities on reusable rockets… Never mind that fact… Also don’t mind the fact that SpaceX is one of the more valuable American companies at the moment.

Truly amazing. This man Elon Musk is what capitalism is all about. The building, Exploring, is not a brand like most American corporations that outsource their production. This man from South Africa, makes the USA look great. If only the hedge funds understood, it is not about extracting it is about developing new ideas and manufacturing in the USA.
