Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” | Official Teaser | 20th Century Studios

Directed by Academy Award® winner Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award® winner Tony Kushner, “West Side Story” tells the classic tale of fierce rivalries and young love in 1957 New York City. This reimagining of the beloved musical stars Ansel Elgort (Tony); Rachel Zegler (María); Ariana DeBose (Anita); David Alvarez (Bernardo); Mike Faist (Riff); Josh Andrés Rivera (Chino); Ana Isabelle (Rosalía); Corey Stoll (Lieutenant Schrank); Brian d’Arcy James (Officer Krupke); and Rita Moreno (as Valentina, who owns the corner store in which Tony works). Moreno – one of only three artists to be honored with Academy®, Emmy®, GRAMMY®, Tony® and Peabody Awards – also serves as one of the film’s executive producers.

Bringing together the best of both Broadway and Hollywood, the film’s creative team includes Kushner, who also serves as an executive producer; Tony Award® winner Justin Peck, who choreographed the musical numbers in the film; renowned Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor and GRAMMY Award® winner Gustavo Dudamel, who helmed the recording of the iconic score; Academy Award®-nominated composer and conductor David Newman (“Anastasia”), who arranged the score; Tony Award®-winning composer Jeanine Tesori (“Fun Home,” “Thoroughly Modern Millie”), who supervised the cast on vocals; and Grammy®-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan (“Beauty and the Beast,” “Chicago”), who served as executive music producer for the film. The film is produced by Spielberg, Academy Award®-nominated producer Kristie Macosko Krieger and Tony Award®-winning producer Kevin McCollum. “West Side Story” has been adapted for the screen from the original 1957 Broadway show, with book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and concept, direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins.

From 20th Century Studios, The Walt Disney Company will release “West Side Story” in U.S. theaters on December 10, 2021.

For those who don’t know, Spielberg’s goal is not remaking the 1961 movie. He want to make West Side Story of his own based on the play, not remaking the 1961 movie

    • Richard Gross says:

@Victor Pascucci IV lmfao, hey, in Poland, they’re saying a Pole is playing her. BTW, my maternal grandparents emigrated from Italy, wisea*s, and none of us subscribe to the white/black/brown/yellow/red thing…take a look at a box of crayons. The only people who consider themselves “white” belong to hate groups. You just belong to a different hate group of your own creation, racist.

    • Richard Gross says:

      @MC I’m “getting at” hypocrisy.

    • Kyle Martinez says:

@Var Varuso apparently Rita Moreno will be playing a different character and she served as Executive Producer for the movie

    • Kurt Rivero says:

@Victor Pascucci IV Zegler was born and grew up in New Jersey.

    • Daniel Dravot says:

@Richard Gross, I think Natalie Wood did to appear more Puerto Rican.

      You know, Maria?

    • MysteryFanGirl says:

I’m sure she is a lovely girl & a good actress but I never understood why can’t a Puerto Rican play a Puerto Rican character on screen 🤷🏻‍♀️ especially in a a famous role

    • jedijones says:

@MysteryFanGirl Er, because, being the best singer and actress is more important than matching an ethnic background. All that matters is what’s up there on the screen.

    • MysteryFanGirl says:

@jedijones Are you saying that representation doesn’t matter? just because someone is talented & kinda looks latin doesn’t make it right to have them play one of the few a roles that it’s clearly written for someone of Puerto Rican descent. There is an immense pool of extremely talented Puerto Rican singers, actors & performers that don’t get a chance to portrait their own stories precisely because of this mind set.

Casting someone from a specific ethnicity makes absolute sense and difference if you want to have representation and authenticity to your story. The same goes for Asian representation, Black representation and all the minorities that never get to see themselves on the screen. Latin actors representation on the movies is one of the lowest numbers, they account for less than 4.5% & most of those roles do not shine a positive light on Latin culture or their people. So I won’t apologize for having a problem with this White washing casting just like it happened in the 1961 movie. Again i’m sure she is lovely & good actress, she is Not the problem. The problem is White Hollywood & their stubbornness to change.

  3. Colonel Green says:

It’s cool that Spielberg first listened to the cast album in the 1950s and eventually got to make his own film version of it.

Bro the absolute whiplash I got seeing Ansel Elgort’s face in the year 2021…

    • Piano ASMR for Sleep, Anxiety and Relaxation says:

@Grace MacIntyre this was filmed a few years ago and was delayed a couple times. He was cast and filmed this before any of that came out. I wouldn’t expect to see him much after this movie. Like TJ Miller showing up in Underwater

    • Nani Taylor says:

      Omg same 😂

    • Sabina Zabarte says:

@Grace MacIntyre there’s no conviction or anything but supposedly in 2017 when he was 20 he had a “consensual and legal relationship” with a girl that started right before her 17th birthday and lasted a couple months. He claimed every interaction they had was consensual and she says otherwise. Seems like he doesn’t want to admit he probably crossed the line in interaction(s) with her because he probably thinks dating someone means you can do whatever

    • Bestie Boys says:

      @Sabina Zabarte He was 24 in 2017.

    • Amelia_034 says:

@Bestie Boys it happened in 2014 actually, he had just turned 21

  6. Lauren Laass says:

Rachel Zegler!!! And Ariana DeBose and Mike Faist!!! Our theatre people!!!

    • silentsmurf says:

      Plus Tony winner David Alvarez!
Actually, I just checked IMDB and there are several Billy Elliot alums, which makes sense. Also Brian D’Arcy James
as Officer Krupke!! And Andréa Burns isn’t credited 😢

    • Greg Mehlin says:

Don’t forget Tony winner David Alvarez

    • Jeff Brehove says:

I just hope Zegler’s favorite movie is still Inside Llewynn Davis

    • Sarah Gent says:

@Glo Jackson I’m very excited for that. I rewatched the original movie a few months ago and even though it’s like sixty years old I got trans vibes from anybody’s. Felt very vindicated by this casting

    • Max Hechtman says:

@Lei Kay But he got injured in that production and had to drop out if you remember.

  7. Nathanael Reyes says:

Ladies and gentlemen: now THIS is a teaser. Been looking forward to this since it was announced and when they filmed it in 2019. Excited to see Spielberg direct a musical.

  8. Garrett Watts says:

This is absolutely unreal. The gratification from something fulfilling every single fiber of an expectation and looking like an actual best case scenario is so rare. This is stunning… from the look of the cast to the vibe of the world and most notably; to the incredible love note to the legacy of West Side Story that is every choice in this trailer. Go Rachel! Go Rita! Go Spielberg! Go… every single person involved! This looks like it’s made with pure love. Level 10 hyped.

  9. Dragon Soul says:

    “Hey, YOU!”
    “Who, me Officer Krupke?”
“Yeah, you. Give me one good reason not to drag you down to the station house, YOU PUNK.”

    • G Chandler says:

      Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar kindly Sergeant Krupke
      Ya gotta understand!
      It’s just our bringin’ up-ke
      That gets us outta hand!

      Our mothers all are junkies
      Our fathers all are drunks!
      Golly Moses!
      Nat’rally we’re punks!

    • Lauren Greenberg says:

      Gee, Officer Krupke, we’re very upset;
We never had the love that every child oughta get
      We ain’t no delinquents
      We’re misunderstood
Deep down inside us there is good!

    • OwlPen-Art says:

      “THERE IS GOOD!”

    • Inez de Groot says:

There is good, there is good, there is untapped good! Deep inside the worst of us is good!

  10. MALINDA says:

This looks perfect. Oh my goodness.
