Episode 20 of AOT the final season was called From You 2000 Years Ago.
we eventually return to the main area of the paths dimension, where the oldest Yeager brother is still trying to process what just happened. Based on everything he saw, Zeke realises that their dad only did what he did because he was shown specific memories from the future that Eren had chosen to send back. This manipulation is why Grisha ate the founder despite knowing he wouldn’t be able to use its power and its why he entrusted everything to his son, leading us to where we are now. I explained this next part in my last video but just incase you didn’t see that, Eren goes on to confirm that four years ago when he kissed Historia’s hand, he saw the memories his dad saw in the Reiss chapel. Among other things, this included future memories of the rumbling, which was sent to his dad by a version of Eren even further in the future. As a result, for the last four years he’s known this destruction was destined to happen and ever since he went to Marley he’s been doing the necessary things to arrive at this result.
However, in this scene Zeke decides to try and take back control of the situation, as he orders Ymir to sterilise every eldian in the world. Because she’s a slave to the royal bloodline Ymir begins following his command without a second thought and she’ll be able to actually do it once she reaches the coordinate. Zeke then correctly points out that although Eren might’ve seen glimpses of the future he obviously didn’t see everything, proven by the fact that at various moments along the way he didn’t know certain things would go against him. Anyway as Ymir edges closer to the coordinate Eren desperately tries to break free from the chains around each of his wrists. These chains are pretty much unbreakable considering they were made by the founder herself but he knows that if he doesn’t escape now then the eldian race has no future. That’s why he was so desperate to reach her and after struggling for a while he pulls away with so much force that both his thumbs were ripped off.
After the opening the anime then suddenly flashes back around 10 years earlier, to a moment between Frieda and Historia. As we already know Frieda would often visit Historia during her childhood and was the one that taught her how to read and write; and in this particular clip they were reading a character who was based on Ymir Fritz. We can tell from the devil on the left page that this book isn’t Ymir’s real backstory but instead it’s one of the many fairy tales inspired by her over the centuries. Krueger said Back in season 3 that anyone can become a god or a devil as long as people believe it and in Ymir’s case, she was considered to be a god by the eldian empire, while also being considered a pawn of the devil by the Marleyeans.
Anyhow moving on to the rest of the episode, in the real world only a second has passed since Gabi aimed for Erens head In this moment here the source of all living matter jumps out of his spine to connect with his head, granting him the true power of the founding titan. Almost immediately following this, the first thing he does is crumble all the hardening on Paradis, collapsing the walls that have been there for over a century. As some of the Hardening falls down in Gabi’s direction, Eren begins his transformation, which was unusual for a few reasons. Not only is his new titan significantly larger and significantly more bony than any titan in history but it also takes on a similar shape to the hallucigiena. This bizarre appearance is the result of Eren transforming while in this condition, cause the source of all living matter had no choice but to improvise and make a new body in its own image.
The titans in the wall then begin to march which is what Armin always predicted Eren would do, although what he wasn’t expecting was the amount of titans that would be set free. Earlier in the season the military was planning to do a rumbling using only the titans in shiganshina, hence why the district was already evacuated, so Armin couldn’t understand why the rest of the walls were being crumbled as well.

@IkeepMovingForward I believe that it is his titan head cuz SPOILER (lf you haven’t read the hole manga don’t read the rest of the comment) when he transform’s into an collosal titan he still has his normal head just with some markings. But I think it would be cooler if he had his titan head as a normal head.

Umm just to know, Eren’s complete titan head is the one that shows up in the end not his normal head (you can’t tell if you haven’t read the manga yet, just to mention it).

@Mouta her back story is unique that’s all. if some people don’t understand, it’s totally fine. also it’s just a couple of minutes, no expression, no dialogues(other than the king), instead just symbolisms. i personally like it, it’s just like an art. also if isayama wanted it, it’s easy to make cliche dramatic backstory that just means to draw viewers emphaty like in other anime, but he didn’t.

Ymir’s face when she chooses not to be a slave is identical to Eren’s when he kisses Historia’s hand; not to give too much away, but there is a significant sense of irony in this.

It almost like the Earth spirit made a covenant with this poor woman to give her the power to fight. I’m convinced she knew in time she’d have these two men who up and free her. I believe her will was shared throughout each transference of her flesh. Her three daughters made those walls that now rise up to destroy.

I love the fact that the majority of the fandom still got their minds blown from how well this scene was executed. Arguably even more chilling than when reading this in the manga for the first time. The soundtrack was perfection.
What strikes me about the Ymir back story, is the similarities the Marleyeans have to Rome, and the eldians to the germanic tribes. It mirrors how western Rome would fall, by the invansion and migration of germanic tribes. Taking their land and adapting roman culture, into germanic culture. But without the giant titan helping them.
