Is 1 GB equal to 1024 MB or 1000 MB?

Unfortunately, these days, the answer is “yes”. That is, while 1 GB was originally 1024 MB, a MB was 1024 KB, and a KB was 1024 bytes, many years of marketers for hard drives using multiples of 1000 left us in a state where both meanings are in common use. But I’d go wit 1024.
