Who Is Responsible For Climate Change? – Who Needs To Fix It?

This video is part of a series about climate change supported by Breakthrough Energy – a coalition founded by Bill Gates, that is working to expand clean-energy investment and support the innovations that will lead the world to net-zero carbon emissions.

Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have released over 1.5 trillion tonnes of carbon dioxide or CO2 into the earth’s atmosphere. In the year 2019 we were still pumping out around 37 billion more. That’s 50% more than the year 2000 and almost three times as much as 50 years ago. And it’s not just CO2. We’re also pumping out growing volumes of other greenhouse gases such as methane and nitrous oxide. Combining all of our greenhouse gases, we’re emitting 51 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents each year.
And emissions keep rising – but they need to get down to 0!

@Renato Medeiros did you have a stroke while writing that

    • Buster Tornado says:

@Renato Medeiros “All his numbers are forged” which is why they list literally every single source in the description? And all of those sources are credible?

  5. Evil Paragon 4 says:

    Me, an Australian:
“Nice, not a single mention of Australia.”
    Me at 4:51:
    “Uh oh.”

    • Prime Royal says:

@NZH Austraila is spending in hydropower(not dams, new techs).

    • m square says:

@John Carroll Phone us up when you can speak English properly and use full stops. See this (.) not this (…..) boomer garbage

    • Tatsu says:

@Evil Paragon 4 You said it yourself, we are the largest coal and oil exporter, therefore we should increase Australia’s numbers…not decrease.

    • Aireon says:

Our carbon emissions in Australia are a bit hard to deal with, we have the cleanest coal in the world, so if we were to stop exporting it to other countries to get our carbon footprint down, other countries that still need to use the coal will just import lower quality product from elsewhere, increasing the global footprint as a whole to more than what it would be if we were exporting the coal. We cannot simply just stop exporting coal to the rest of the world.

    • Evil Paragon 4 says:

@C_ Jones nιѕнanт мalιĸ The joke was 4:51, because that’s when population per emission starts to be mentioned.

  6. pyrosianheir says:

Everyone needs to do the most. Developed nations should be leading the way in reducing lifestyle emissions while also being willing to help developing nations reduce their survival emissions. Only by genuinely working together will the balance finally start to trend downwards for good…. Not that literally anywhere will actually consider something like that. :/

    • justradu lol says:

pyrosianheir it is what it is. now that the corona virus came out of china people will be more racist to asian people:(

    • hahaha benis XDDD says:

I’m not reducing my quality of life because people elsewhere in the world are breeding when they shouldn’t, I’m also not reducing my quality of life because elsewhere in the world nations are being careless with their pollution.
I’d rather fight to the death for the right to have a better quality of life, that is the human way.

    • Nightowler says:

@hahaha benis XDDD cool, your name makes much more sense now.

    • scurus11scurus says:

if only i knew this comment was here before i watched the video

@hahaha benis XDDD Oh, they’re doing what we did a few hundered years ago? Guess we’re not gonna help them to save everyone, then.

  7. Matt Ryu says:

You’d think older politicians would be more mature than kids but at the end of the day it’s “but they did it first!”

    • Green Purple says:

What does that have to do with being immature? They’re politicians. It’s their job to shift blame and target short-term success.
Combine that with them being greedy and old, why would they care about what’s going to happen to the planet?

    • Matt Ryu says:

I agree with ya. Definitely those in power need to help those without. But it’s still everyone’s responsibility. We should focus on how to solve this, not focus on who’s fault it is.

    • Wega Winarso says:

@Green Purple That is painfully true. Their entire mindset probably something along the lines of, “eh, does it matter if the world dies in 100 years.Since I would be dead by then anyway, I might aswell make a ton of money before the world end”

    • hahaha benis XDDD says:

Because communism strips people of their personhood.
Fault based divorce laws: rightful and just
Fault based insurance laws: rightful and just
You break it, you fix it, inconveniencing others because you ruined something is the most childish mindset to have.

    • Connection Lost says:

It’s funny you think you’d do things differently. You must live in opposite land.

  8. Samin Yead says:

“Working out who’s responsible….in a way, is a daft question.” There, that says it. We all need to do our part. Understand what our part should be, and do that.

    • CommaCo says:

      Easier said than done.

    • BakPak Gaming says:

Well most of the garbage patch is trash that the US and Canada sold to China for disposal only to have it dumped into the ocean.

But I’m not about to go against the communist party of China, those are some scary people. 😖

The Canada, Mexico, and US are trying to work together on a big recycling program, iso how well they’ll work together, but there’s hope.

    • Ivan says:

      @BakPak Gaming

7:15 “the harsh reality is that it’s the countries that contribute the least to the problem that stand to lose the most from rapid climate change”

….. It can’t be truer than this

  14. Lord Unknown says:

Every country agrees that every other country should do more to handle climate control.

  15. George Wang says:

2:03 notice the sealandian flag in the bottom left corner, while he’s saying “we’ll talk exclusively about nation-states”, therefore implying that sealand is a sovereign state.

  16. Pogostic09 says:

“It would be hard to defend, if facts matter to you”
What a polite way of saying “The facts are against you, and if you don’t realize you’re wrong, you’re kind of an idiot and just believe what you want to believe.”

    • JerEditz says:

I mean I looked at it as a way to bring in the people who are so defensive instead of disregarding them so it doesn’t blow up in our faces. Because usually ignoring a group ends up becoming a big problem down the line.

  17. DarkR0ze says:

  18. Batnick Studios says:

Beginning to think the “great filter” is in front of us.

  19. Vade Pierce says:

Let’s not forget…. the president of the USA doesn’t even believe in climate change😕

  20. Tim Solinski says:

    Here is a fact:
    Facts don’t matter in politics.

As long that doesn’t change we have a problem.
