Fun fact: France gave the US the Statue of Liberty as a “trojan horse”, as France took sides with its neighbor, England. The plan sorta backfired however when the US put the statue on a non-populated island with no food, and no way to get off. The French army, in its entirety, was trapped on Liberty Island and starved to death. Thus the US defeated its second enemy without firing a single shot. Meanwhile France had lost all of its military and decided never to fight in a war again.

But… What Is FEDERAL LAND Like What Does It Mean? (For real though?)

    • dontwatchmyvideos says:

Federal lands are lands in the United States owned by the federal government. Pursuant to the Property Clause of the United States Constitution (Article Four, section 3, clause 2), the Congress has the power to retain and sell foreign lands and to regulate federal lands, such as by limiting cattle grazing on them. These powers have been recognized in a long line of U.S. Supreme Court decisions. – Wiki

Historically the English language has always assumed countries to be female “America and her navy” etc

    • Leo says:

@Sophie Beaumont In the modern four main romance languages, the equivalent word for “nation” is of the female gender. I’m not sure, but I believe that is also the case in German. I don’t know about Latin, though, too complicated, but since it’s daughter languages have all the same gender for the world I’m tempted to guesstimate there’s more to it than mere coincidence.

I live in New York and I’ve never heard about this dispute between New Jersey and New York over the Statue of Liberty until now. That’s crazy stuff. But I do see how from a geographical perspective New Jersey was always right. Staten Island is much closer to them than it is to New York as well as the islands. What a bunch of assholes we have in New York. 😅

What happens if, because of Global Warming, the complete island gets under water. Does it become New Jersey’s?
