Elon Musk thinks we are living in a simulated reality. Nick Bostrom think those chances are more around 20 percent. The chances of human kind participating in a simulated reality is broken down into three options: 1) humans go extinct before we are able to run a simulation of this size. 2) Humans are uninterested in running ancestor simulations. 3) We are currently participating in the simulation.

The amount of energy it would take to run a simulation the size of our
universe would be equal to or greater than the amount of energy contained
within it. Each successive simulated universe would get smaller and smaller
because the amount of energy within them would have to decrease. That means
the chance of us being in a simulated universe is much smaller than Musk
probably thinks it is UNLESS the rules that apply to our universe do not
apply in the universe that ran the first simulation.

Why is Elon Musk so certain the third option is true? Bolstrom himself says
that we cant really say right now what their likelihoods are and so we
should just assume theyre all about equally likely.

what if this is a simulation and theres another one to and its whole
purpose is to see what will happen if we do advanced with technology and
what will happen if we dont and our past is failed simulations and they
provided us with that information so that we wont do the same thing 0_0

  17. Michael K says:

I don’t see why the potential to be in a simulation means that we most
    likely are.

  18. GaLoS says:

Wouldn’t it be awesome if when we died in this simulation, we woke up in
reality/server list and then chose a different universe while retaining the
knowledge we gained in this one? What if this is the starting simulation?
