@scishow Do not take grapefruit juice at all with all drugs that pass
through CYP3A4 (statins, calcium channel blockers, etc). Furanocoumarins
binds irreversibly and the inhibition can stay very long. With statins,
there are cases of rhabdomyolysis after 1 week GFJ was stopped. Also, apple
and orange juices can interact with some medications because they inhibit
OATPs transporters. In this case, instead of having too much medication,
you are not receiving enough. Always ask your pharmacist or doctor.

i used to eat whole grapefruit on a daily basis, including all the juice
that came out of them. so does that mean my body was absorbing a lot of
    toxins at that time?

and for the record, when you buy a carton of grapefruit juice at the store
it tastes nothing like getting a fresh ruby red grapefruit and juicing it
or eating the pulp. those are the ones with reddish pink pulp, not pale
pink or yellow pulp. those ones are gross.

  14. Katharina Bucher says:

Two things: Sometimes knocking out the enzyme is a good thing, but it
depends on the things you’re taking and what they do and how they work. For
instaance, potentiating codeine would be completely ineffective because
codeine is a prodrug and doesn’t do anything on its own – it works by being
metabolized into morphine and norecodeine. So don’t potentiate prodrugs. 2.
This works best with grapefruit juice from concentrate and is almost
completely ineffective if it’s fresh. Also other things can be used to
potentiate that knock out the same enzyme, like the antihistamine
diphenhydramine. DXM, caffeine and other substances potentiate via
different avenues. Potentiation can be a good thing because it enables you
to take smaller doses, which is important when it comes to things that
alter your brain chemistry because it enables you to conserve your
    medication and reduce your tolerance.
