So just buy a round trip ticket to London, stay as long as you want, then buy another round trip ticket to go home. Still cheaper.

    • Super Smash Dolls says:

Airlines don’t sell minimum-stay fares that close to departure. You have to book both round-trip tickets a month in advance in order for dropping your second leg to be profitable. If you miss your flight at the airport, you’ll be paying the most expensive ticket price, and it will be cheaper to buy the one-way ticket, unless you wanna spend another month there.

Also, when I said you couldn’t do this, I assumed OP was talking about taking the second leg of a round-trip flight but not the first. Taking two first legs is possible. However, I would still recommend not booking both round-trips on the same airline, since such overlapping bookings would be easy to detect and cancel or upcharge. Yes, it’s legal for them to deny boarding or booking if they suspect minimum stay requirements aren’t being met, since that’s the condition you agreed to when you bought the ticket.

    • cococly says:

Super Smash Dolls are you on drugs? You are talking about Visa requirments for a ticket that an airline sells?

Did you know not all passengers on a US-to-UK flights are neither British nor American? They can be Japanese, Sudanese, or Russians.

Passengers with Dual citizenships can also use their other passport to enter their destination, and not the one on airlines’ record.

Do you work at the Revenue Department of some Greedy Airline?

    • Jivan Moulandi says:

Let’s say you buy a JFK-LHR return and use only one way and later buy an LHR-JFK return and again using only one way you fine because there are two separate tickets. The problem comes if you buy a JFK-LHR-CDG return instead of JFK-LHR because it’s cheaper and get off in LHR the rest of the ticket gets invalidated automatically, due to missing legs LHR-CDG-LHR…

    • allocater2 says:

Why does the airline even care how long someone stays?

    • Pierce says:

bro why are you verified? you have 150 subscribers.

  16. Jasim Zoobi says:

Hey Wendover, can you please make a video on why African flights are so expensive even though the aircraft are worse?

    • mizzy mauri says:

Which Aircrafts are u talkin about? If u fly with Emirates, British Airways, Brussels Airways, KLM and many others then u good.. if u fly with Local african aircrafts then idk.. i had the worst flying experiences with Ethopian Airways and Egyptair.. so i guess its all about the company you fly with and if you book earlier you will find some cheap ones!!

    • Jasim Zoobi says:

David Zhou What you said about US to Africa and vise versa is most likely true, but when it comes to flights around Africa, I don’t think that’s the case. There are many airlines, both regular and budget that operate flights, so there is competition.

    • Jasim Zoobi says:

mizzy mauri I think Ethiopian is one of the best in Africa, maybe you had a one-off bad experience. Their service is decent and their aircraft is new (they have an Airbus A350 but I don’t think it flies in and around Africa). Other companies have aircraft that are at least 10 to 15 years old and simple things like seat recline and headphone jacks don’t work. Not to forget the bad in-flight entertainment while still being around $1000 for a flight from Dakar to Accra (not even direct).

    • Michael Garry says:

But there often isn’t non-flight competition, ie the roads and rail are bad enough to put people off using them, or the distances are too long. Then you get into price-matching as mentioned in the video.

    • Gabriel Perurena says:

Watch his video on how airlines schedule flights. It’s the same reason why flights to South America are so expensive.

  17. adtc says:

“Travellers to Dublin only have one choice” that’s wrong, they also have a choice of getting on a ship.

  18. Hypex says:

Nice video ! Really informative and interesting videos thanks for the content !

  19. ImSemtex says:

If you only need a one way ticket to London, then just buy a return ticket, but don`t attend the plane on the way back 😉

  20. surfie007 says:

Somehow it’s cheaper for someone to purchase a return ticket from Sydney to London (16,990km / 10,560mi) (around US$1,082) than it is for someone to purchase a return ticket from New York to London (5,567km / 3,459mi) (around US$1,492) *Explain that*

    • Matthew Mulcahy says:

My guess is it’s simple supply and demand

    • EpicKaiserTom says:

Airports are fixed in their size; they have an inelastic supply. They can grow over time but usually much slower than demand. As a result, airports can charge higher and higher fees and still have demand equal to their supply. This is much like concerts or sporting events or amusement parks; these places are only so big and expanding them requires more land.

If you have 1,000 seats to fill and 10,000 people are willing to pay $50 for those seats, it is in your best interest to raise prices until the amount of people willing to pay that price equals the amount of seats you have.

    • connoryoung1993 says:

Story of George Flights from UK airports excluding Northern Ireland are subject to the Air Passenger Duty (APD) tax. The UK’s APD is much higher than the equivalent taxes in any other country. But it’s only charged on flights originating in the UK, not connecting through the UK. This is why you’ll see flights connecting through London for cheaper. Of course long haul direct flights also come at a premium.

    • connoryoung1993 says:

Competition I would say. If I want to fly between Australia and UK then I could fly with British Airways or Qantas. Or Singapore Airlines. Or Cathay Pacific. Or the Japanese and Korean carriers. Or the Chinese carriers. Then chuck in the Middle East 3 that have brought down long haul fares massively (some would say unfairly). This is also mainly a leisure driven market and when you’re forced to make a stop, all these options are relatively similar.

As for NY to London a lot of competition has been reduced by airlines creating strategic partnerships. United, Lufthansa Group and Air Canada have a partnership. BA and American do. Delta and Air France KLM do. And it means they can essentially price fix their flights to the same (read higher) amounts without penalty. You’ve also got a lot more business travel between the two cities driving higher prices. The only real competition faced is from the LCCs like Norwegian and WOW. But the main carriers are getting in on that now with new carriers like Eurowings and Level.

    • Nick DeCapua says:

Becuase New York and London r big money airports and charge higher landing fees gate fees service fees etc. my point being hey charge more for everything
