LYRICS
What’s my problem?
Well, I want you to follow me down to the bottom,
Underneath the insane asylum,
Keep your wits about you while you got ‘em,
‘Cause your wits are first to go while you’re problem-solving.
And my problem?
We glorify those even more when they..
My opinion, our culture can treat a loss,
Like it’s a win and right before we turn on them,
We give them the highest of praise,
And hang their banner from a ceiling,
Communicating, further engraving,
An earlier grave is an optional way.
No.

Neon gravestones try to call for my bones.

What’s my problem?
Don’t get it twisted.
It’s with the people we praise who may have assisted,
I could use the streams and extra conversations,
I could give up, and boost up my reputation,
I could go out with a bang, they would know my name,
They would host and post a celebration.
My opinion will not be lenient,
My opinion, it’s real convenient,
Our words are loud, but now I’m talking action,
We don’t get enough love? Well, they get a fraction.
They say “How could he go if he’s got everything?”
I’ll mourn for a kid, but won’t cry for a king.

Promise me this,
If I lose to myself,
You won’t mourn a day,
And you’ll move onto someone else.

But they won’t get them. No they won’t get them.

Don’t get me wrong, the rise in awareness,
Is beating a stigma that no longer scares us,
But for sake of discussion, in spirit of fairness,
Could we give this some room for a new point of view?
And could it be true that some could be tempted,
To use this mistake as a form of aggression,
A form of succession, a form of a weapon,
Thinking “I’ll teach them,” well, I’m refusing the lesson,
It won’t resonate in our minds.
I’m not disrespecting what was left behind,
Just pleading that it does not get glorified,
Maybe we swap out what it is that we hold so high.
Find your grandparents or someone of age,
Pay some respects for the path that they paved,
To life they were dedicated.
Now that should be celebrated.

Am I the only one that thinking about vessel’s songs when listening to Trench because of the same words tyler is using on both albums ??? Like it’s a full circle…

    • adriana ciobanu says:

Someone no, u are not the only one.. i thought thrench will be comercial music, but i.m very glad that they put their own verse in that.. When i listened the hole album, I had the vessel vibe, and i.m glad for that!!! This is kind of album that will never die, even over a 100 years from no one it will be listening. There are so powerfull messages in every play ☺️

    • aye says:

I also have Vessel vibes from this album and I love it

  3. greekfren.dandou says:

I’m at a loss of words.. Now I’m not anything like a poet or a musician but oh man this.. This very song.. It has such a heavy meaning and a really calm but outstanding flow I just cannot listen to it without getting chills all over my body every time I hear those lyrics. You did it Tyler. Thank you.

  4. Bri says:

The ending is so POWERFUL and I applaud Tyler for making this statement! The shows like 13 reasons why and other forms of “raising awareness for suicide” isn’t equating to prevention of it. It always paints this picture that the people around you didn’t try hard enough to save you so you should use suicide as a weapon against them. It’s toxic and it’s not helping in a society where we joke about wanting to die 24/7. Instead of glorifying death we need to put the focus back on how beautiful and worth it is to stay alive. |-/

  5. autumn dismay says:

trench has been out for around three hours in the US and i put off listening to it now. i chose this one to listen to first. i don’t know how,,but these two boys managed to save my life again. ive spent this year feeling so lost. like i lost who i am. when one of my favorite singers passed away, i felt devastated. things went downhill this year. i lost motivation and the will to stay alive. ever since march of 2017 i got worse and worse and farther in denial of it. this song opened my eyes. i don’t know how but tyler and josh saved me again. i remember being lost in 2016 and discovering their music through my brother recommending i listen to stressed out because of my parents divorce i was going through. things got so bad. this song stopped the voices for a few minutes. thank you.

  6. Kyle Martell-Grimslid says:

Hi Tyler and Josh, I know you probably will not see this comment but on the off chance that you stumble across it, I would like to thank you for everything that you both have done. I think I am speaking for everyone when I say that you both have sincerely changed my life. I don’t think I have ever felt this connected to someone through music until I listened to you two. Sometimes it’s scary to me how much we think alike. There have been some dark times in my life that I don’t think I would have gotten out of if you two weren’t here. I’m starting to ramble so I’m going to stop now but the last thing I would like to say is just know that we are all extremely grateful to have twenty one pilots in our lives. ||-// 🤘🏼

  7. Johannah Mathew says:

This song got to me quite a bit especially the part where it says ‘promise me this, if I lose to myself, you won’t morn a day, and you’ll move onto to someone else’ because both geting lost in yourself and suicide are too hard to hide from the soul minds of us, it also made me think about how you have to try your hardest to be a selfless person and not a selfish person.

  8. Not Too Shabby says:

Warning for those listening to this for the first time: this is a heavy hitter

  9. Taeseok kiwi says:

People : 21 pilots makes suicide look good.
Intellectuals : They literally the reason why i didn’t end it.

    • Taeseok kiwi says:

coshols i am really proud of you for being strong and going throught it like this, yes music may help us but you should be proud because you did it, its your will that made you reach this point, life can be very messy i agree but ending it should never be an option, and Yes Tøp are really good somg writers that want to prove that no matter how dark your insides may be you still have to live and go on with life, proof they are here and alive,So should you be, they are doing music like they love to do and we all should find what we love and go for it 💜💜💜
And it will be worth it someday… I promise you.

    • meow guy says:

I think you have the titles switched up there, bud

  10. Katie says:

I never thought I’d live to my current age of 17. My current goal is to make it to 25. The last couple of lines made me think I might just have to push it a few more decades.

    • HeyRobertax says:

you, you are going to make it. i so freaking believe that you will. I’m almost 24 now and never EVER thought i’d make it past 17. i’m glad i stayed at least this long. i plan to stay much longer. i hope that you decide to, too. please.

    • mary_stormageddon says:

When I was around your age, I never thought I could make it to 23. I was convinced I’d end my life by then because I was so miserable and in so much pain, the thought of living much longer with it seemed exhausting and impossible. I’m 32 now. I have two kids who are my everything. I have a husband who is also my best friend. I thank God every single day that I didn’t give into that fear. I won’t lie and say my life is completely better; I still have plenty of pain. But I now see the other side of it, I’ve gained perspective, and have reasons to be grateful to be alive. Life is a series of ups and downs. The ups make me so glad to be here still, and during the downs, hold on to those ups until the next one comes. I promise you; it will come.

    • Rebecca Federkins says:

Katie I and so many other people are in the same boat as you. Every birthday for the last 5 years was a surprise. I’m glad I’m still here though. And I’m glad you are too, and everyone else who replied here.

    • SkeletonCliqueBait says:

please do 🖤💛 the clique is here for you. life is worth it, you just need to keep going, please

    • emma bridgers says:

You can do it I believe in You and I’m glad this song made you want to live more decades. I want you to be happy. Stay alive.|-/

    • Ka Wrss says:

not really. Its Beethoven -moonlight sonata mixed in with tons of pop in it. The way the notes shift and hangs is rewashed pop done a mill times. The beethoven rip is fucking sad tho. I put 21-P on a high place in my music list and this is just a let down. ”Stressed out lyric : I wish I found some chords in an order that is new ~ ” So its a major let down.

    • tøp Yee says:

+Ka Wrss they made all this from scratch, they literally locked themselves up in a basement. You can see in their new interviews.

  15. MrMeSoLonely says:

This song reminds me of Chester…
    Rest in peace.

  16. Javi Hernandez says:

It’s sad that, out of the whole manifest against glorification of suicide and, by extension, depression that this song represents, people are focused on the “promise me this…” bridge, that is the only part vaguely sad/emo/suicidal. Yeah I know it’s strong and deep, but in a song about not romantizing mental illnesses there’s a lot of better lines to pick than the single part that kinda indulges it. For example, the final poetry/spoken word verse, that’s actually powerful, gives us a lesson and has those optimistic final lines that are simply beautiful.

    • Alžbeta Borková says:

I think those lines perfectly fit the theme of the song. Maybe he’s just saying that if I give up I don’t deserve your mourning so don’t do that. That sounds cruel but he tries to make people stay alive. I’m not saying that people who just pick those lines understand this.

    • Javi Hernandez says:

+Alžbeta Borková well, I somewhat agree with your interpretation, but I’m afraid about people misunderstanding or decontextualizing them, and they becoming a common emo/depressing instagram caption or tweet. Which imo would be the exact opposite of what Tyler wants with this song.

    • Alžbeta Borková says:

      +Javi Hernandez Yes, you’re right.

  17. Casey Galloway says:

This album gives me self titled/regional at best/no phun intended vibes and I’ve never been happier

  19. Jess T says:

I liked what he had said before…
    let’s glorify getting old instead.

This song IS a conversation starter. Its true that in the desperate endeavor to raise awareness for things like mental disorders, they have become a key point that can bring fame to many. It has thus been normalized even though this is not something that should be normal (health wise). I mean you hear of a celeb suicide and the simple act of saying things such as “they’re free” does actually glorify suicide because of what it implies. It takes away from the gravity of the situation. I can’t remember but I heard a podcast that actually said celeb suicides DO raise suicide rates.

To a minor extent I also hear so many of my classmates saying things like “I want to die” jokingly and obviously they don’t do it with negative intents however someone who personally deals with some pretty severe thoughts won’t be taken as seriously when they do try to speak out.

Conversations are important but being logical and not glorifying is key.

    Let’s begin to glorify living.
