Game Theory: Dear Twitch, Grow Up!

Game Theory: Dear Twitch, Grow Up!

* In this episode we made mistakes when referring to certain streamers and the DMCA takedown notices. Hassan’s takedown was fake and Disguised Toast staged his takedown. We also made an error when suggesting that Twitch legitimize the TV Meta using Amazon Prime, not realizing Prime Watch Parties are a thing. We want to apologize for wrongly portraying parts of the situation and we hope that the sentiment can still shine through and raise awareness in-spite of our mistakes. *

Twitch is an interesting platform. Watching it grow feels very reminiscent of YouTube back in the day. So I guess that means I need to talk about it. Lately there’s been a bunch of talk around people like Pokimane being banned or Ludwig getting into copyright trouble by switching over to YouTube. Theorists, it’s time for old man MatPat to give some advice to the new wave of creators. Let’s go!

And don’t forget to check out @Ludwig!

It is interesting to think that Twitch brought it on themselves a wee bit by making contracted streamers hit huge amounts of stream hours as opposed to making the hours more flexible to allow for more unique, shorter content. Streamers with paid deals make up a tiny portion of the overall number of streamers but a higher % of them have opted to do this “react to TV shows” type of thing, probably because it’s easy and fills those hours up

When MatPat says: “I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed,” he has officially taken his final DadPat form.

At least twitch tries to, you know, help creators with policy issues properly.

YouTube can’t even provide proper transparent explanations for how their guidelines work or properly roll out copyright issues.

yes but theyre not really that great on that front either. a streamer i watch, sneegsnag, played a small amount of a greenday song on a stream 2+ years ago and he got a DMCA strike. the vod being over 2 years old was obviously already deleted and they gave him no way to undo it. meanwhile some of his friend get away with much MUCH more DMCA-able music on stream.

@Commie Dog42 yup. Small creator on YT was being shunted by the system, all videos got age-restricted when they shouldn’t have. Her videos were recently unrestricted after she and her community reached out. It’s a small community. I don’t see Twitch doing anything for small streamers.

@trance peirce True lmao, they’re somehow both worse than each other

    • Commie Dog42 says:

Bro what are you saying, atleast youtube treats large and tiny channels equally trash. Twitch have a handful of multimillionaires that they treat like gods while EVERYONE else is just gum on the bottom of their boots

    • joey smith says:

      Thank you

  5. Vincent Sanko says:

Let’s be real, until twitch actually has fair and consistent rules on what content is ok (ie. not favoring bigger channels with flexibility smaller channels don’t get), I don’t ever see twitch “growing up”.

  6. Just Some Guy without a Mustache says:

I like how a lot of big streamers have broken the rules and haven’t been “permabanned” while smaller Twitch streamers get permabanned when they slip up once.

    • DarkLordMathias says:

@princess brennyn I mean, women do tend to bring in more viewers and dono’s than the average man. All the simps that are out there are proof.

    • a Tin of Spam says:

twitch gotta get that publicity money, it’s an Amazon company after all

    • Giorno Giovanna the 2th says:

      @Jonhnny Ringo
Wow, poki is the most masculine man ever because only men get banned! /s

    • Crown_Sovereign says:

Thats because bigger streamers make twich bigger bucks, so more leqay

    • Gamer Hex says:

@D V Ur blind to how Twitch works. He’s definitely right, Twitch favors women streamers way more than men streamers and Twitch will let the female streamers get away w ALOT

  7. Critical Nobody says:

I can’t wait for all the big streamers to react to this video and somehow miss the point of it

  8. DavToed Official PT-PT says:

“You said you were a GAMER!”
Twich: “I only play mobile games.”

  9. FilloTheArmodillo says:

Honestly I prefer a world where streamers can react to videos and listen to music while playing a game. It honestly makes a better stream giving us better content

  10. Stutpip123 says:

I prefer twitch here because the copyright detection is ruining some genuine content with false positives.
