Why Texas and Alabama are In the Playoff and Florida State is Out + Early Thoughts on CFP Matchups

FOX Sports’ lead college football analyst Joel Klatt reacts to the College Football Playoff Committee’s Decision to include one-loss Texas and Alabama over undefeated Florida State in the Top 4. He details how this decision came down to the path of least resistance for the committee members when choosing between 3 hard choices. Klatt then goes through how the sport got to this point with the era of the 4-team Playoff format and how it has hurt the sport as a whole. He then gives his early thoughts on the two CFP Semifinals including why Alabama presents a unique problem for Michigan and why the Longhorns ran into their worst matchup among the Top 4 teams when they drew Washington.

The only reasonable expectation we, as college Football fans, should have is that the committee should be consistent. In the 10 years or whatever of their existence we haven’t gotten that

    • @MylesHSG says:

I think if Texas has been ranked over Oregon and Florida State had started to fall a couple weeks ago this wouldn’t be as controversial. It’s like they had 1 rules for the regular season and then boom they change to the “best 4” to decide the CFP.

    • @techlorknight338 says:

They have though. Consistently doing whatever with whatever criteria fits the season to ensure at least 1 sec team is in

    • @factandsuspicionpodcast2727 says:

@@techlorknight338Which year wasn’t an SEC team clearly among the four best teams in the country? They’ve won six of 9, so that leaves three seasons to choose from.

Stop with the conspiracy theories. There are simply better explanations available.

Of course they are mad at Bama. but better watch out when its the worl against Bama it ends up with saban on someones shoulders carrying a trophy. Bama and Texas in the championship game is my perdiction and Bama gets that win back.

    • @stevenfoster9027 says:

As an FSU fan, I’m not mad at Alabama. I’m mad at the committee, ESPN, and the ACC. The only team to beat FSU this year was 13 old guys in a conference room.

    • @Gk54493 says:

THATS WHAT IM SAYING! 😂 everyone is ignoring Texas got in with a L too

  3. @JOHNP2040 says:

What’s lost on this is the ACC was one of the leagues that blocked the 12 team playoff from happening this year.

  4. @raybowles8587 says:

Using the committee’s analogy, in the NCAA basketball brackets, why not just pick 4 teams they think people will want to watch and get rid of the 64 team bracket, since wins and loses don’t seem to matter anymore.

    • @Max2nice says:

Because consistency matters. The league was scrambling after tcu was down 30 points in the second biggest game of the year…….. the might underdog that’s goes on historic run gets annihilated by a team in a better conference all to never be heard from again. The committee literally could not afford that

    • @Lazarus-nw1ve says:

      @@Max2niceright, MONEY.
At least TCU made it to a kickoff and was showed “NO” on the field.
      FSU was told “NO SHOW.”
      Expectation on paper won out.

There is no anbesol to be used here. No explanation works when your told you are nothing but “entertainment” and the big boys are here now…have a nice day.

The thing I hate about the 12 team is that your 9-3 10-2 teams won’t get the pleasure of a successful regular season and a bowl win. Imagine being a steadily top 12 team and you’re “rewarded” with being blown out every post season.

    • @rcgray262 says:

Your saying this might not be the boost to James Franklin’s career the media portrays it as?

nobody cares about the Potato bowl

  6. @Dan-vo7vc says:

It’s kinda circular reasoning to make decisions by strength of wins, when the determination is based on ranking the committee creates. Two weeks ago, every analyst was saying Oregon and OSU were looking like the best teams in the country.

The best athletes learn how to win ugly, when they’re not playing their best.

  7. @pestyoverlord says:

This committee was doomed from the moment an adult man named Boo said Bo Nix’s completion percentage was the reason to rank ducks over texas and bama💀

  8. @clarencepointer says:

The most SHOCKING revealing was last year, when TCU lost their Conference Championship game and didn’t drop one single spot. Now that was unbelievable

    • @joshsmith7692 says:

I think a 3rd in SEC Bama making the 4 team playoff OVER the #2 SEC team said everything about college football, the committee and all of college and professional sports. It’s not about lining the best teams up, it’s about favorite teams playing every year.

    • @sdidadon8445 says:

Exactly this year just showing the Bama hate…. If Bama beat GA and GA was still number 1 nobody would be saying anything… remember last year Bama sat at number 5 nobody said anything about TCU losing and not dropping a spot… this year everyone mad because Bama beat the 1 team that’s also the two time defending champions it’s a problem they get in…. Nobody saying anything about Texas one lost and got the 3 spot…. If The Ducks had beat Washington and made it to the 4 spot over FSU I swear it wouldn’t be an outrage… this Is all Bama hate

  9. @snellsworld2648 says:

FSU’s best win was Bama’s third best win. FSU’s strength of schedule is ranked 55 Alabama strength of schedule is ranked 5 and Texas SOS is 13, and Georgia’s SOS is 37. FSU had wins over three ranked teams and Bama has wins over four ranked teams. All of FSU’s opponents collectively have a record of 77 – 79 and Bama’s collective opponents have a record of 98 – 61. One of FSU’s wins is a 5 – 7 Florida. FSU blew a 21 point lead on Boston College, needed overtime against Clemson, and trailed at home in the second half to Duke before Riley Leonard exited with an injury.

    • @snellsworld2648 says:

@@jalalmusleh450 Didn’t need overtime to win against Clemson, wasn’t trailing North Alabama by 10 points, and they were trailing Duke until the injury……..

    • @Gravel22Gaming says:

@@user-vk9xp3iq7b To a team that they’re behind in the rankings. Stop pretending like an FSU-Michigan game would have been close. If Travis were healthy, I’d have no problem putting FSU above Bama based on their 13-0 record, but his leg got broken and they had to go to a 3rd string QB. Travis was their point scorer. Without him, I would expect a 38-17 game against Michigan (maybe even a larger gap). Not enjoyable to watch. FSU was a deserving team. Bama was the better team.

  10. @bluekai85 says:

Totally agree. The problem is not about which team the committee wants to put in, four best teams, four most deserving teams or four most handsome teams. They can put whoever they want, but please with consistency. They have no consistency at all from begin to end, they are doing this with a free style.
